I did it in this blog!

I don’t have any knowledge about coding and programming but I was able to set this up and I am now having a blast, enjoying this journey of writing what I love and being able to share it with you.

I just want you to know that if you are planning to have your own site or blog, it is possible.

And you don’t need to worry about the pressure of learning the geeky side of site building because there is a way for your dream of having a blog site come true.

One Important Advice

On a personal note, as a corporate worker who goes to work daily at 9 to 5, my life has become a routine. I need something to make me feel alive. I need to do something that feeds my soul.

If you know that your purpose in life is to write, and you just ended up in a normal job that has nothing to do with writing, I suggest you start a blog, and write again. You need to do it, not for anyone else but for you.

If there is one thing you have to keep in mind before starting a blog, that is to choose a topic that you deeply love, something you are passionate about. Something that you believe in, because at the end of the day this is the one that will push you to keep moving forward when your journey gets tough.

In the blogging world, this is called Niche.

It might be about health, fitness, dogs, travel, cars or whatever. What is important is this is a topic that you really love and you enjoy writing about.

Well, for me, it is travel and blogging. That’s what this site is all about!

Steps in Creating Your Own Blog

Now that you already know the most important tip about blogging, it’s about time to start your blog. Here we go.

You actually have the option to go for free platforms like blogspot, wordpress.com and tumblr, if your purpose is just write and share what you create.

But once you choose this free option, your blog will have an extension name like instead of having jontotheworld.com, you’ll have jontotheword.blogspot.com.

To be honest this looks amateurish right?

On the other hand, if you have bigger plans for your blog, like building a solid platform, a business or something big in the future, you have to create your own self-hosted blog like this one, jontotheworld.com.

See the direct DOTcom? It’s more professional. And in the tough world of blogging, a self-hosted blog has more edge over the free ones.

Having a self-hosted blog also gives you more freedom in terms of lay-out, plug-ins and even opportunities, unlike the free ones that has a lot of limitations.

If you want to have your self-hosted blog, here are the steps you need to take.

1 | Get a Host for your Blog

Hosting simply means that your blog or site needs to have a place to stay or live. Through the service of a hosting company, your blog will be saved in their servers and it’s all yours. You have all the freedom to do what you want with it.

To simply explain, it’s like an online equivalent to having your own house or apartment. It’s yours and you have full control of it. Unlike the free options where your blog can be deleted anytime by others discretion.

The hosting that I use is Bluehost. It’s reliable and has top-notch customer service. With an affordable amount of as low as 4 dollars a month, you can avail their service. You can also easily make payment using credit cards. Hassle free. (Below is the video tutorial)

2 | Get a Domain Name

Domain name simply means the name of your blog, like jontotheworldcom.

If hosting is like your own home or space, your domain name is your address, your identity and brand. If you get a hosting with Bluehost, you can have your own domain name for free.

For more video tutorial, this is how you can get your own domain name and hosting with Bluehost.

3 | Install WordPress Blogging Tool

Once you already have your own host and domain, you need have a blogging platform that will enable you to write contents and manage it with the simplest comfort.

The most popular blogging tool is wordpress. It is a blogging software most bloggers use. Through wordpress, you don’t need to do some programming and coding to set-up your blog’s design and contents. It’s like having your blog without the need for too much technical stuff.

WordPress is the answer if you worry about the technicalities and geekyness of creating your own site. It is simple, and a powerfull blogging tool. So it is important that you install and use it.

If you choose Bluehost, they provide simple and helpful guide to download wordpress platform in your own blog. And you may start blogging right away. Watch this video.

4 | Design Your Blog

My favorite writer, Jeff Goins, simply explains that if wordpress is like the architecture of your blog, you need to paint the walls and design it.

And you can simply do that through Themes. It’s like a template design that you can download and use in your blog, depending on your choice of lay-out and design of course.

There are a lot of free themes online.

You also have the option to purchase premium themes which you need to purchase.

But if you are just starting out, it’s better to use a free theme first. There are a lot of really good free themes out there. Here is the list of the best free themes that are professional looking, neat and awesome.

5 | Start Blogging!

Now that you have all you need, you may start blogging, or writing your contents!

As you share what you create, do not forget to connect with other bloggers online. It’s going to be an amazing experience. I assure you that, and this might be a way for you to earn extra income if you really work hard.

Remember, you don’t need to be a geek to build your own blog or site!

And most importantly, just blog what you love. And you’re going to enjoy your journey with blogging. 🙂

      Hi Scotty,

Thank you and really appreciate your comment. I am happy that you are also into blogging.

Me too, i’ve studied blogging for a while before actually started my own blog. But you know, what I’ve realized? It’s ok to start NOW, even though you feel that you aren’t ready yet, because you will learn along the way. It is better to take action early than reading and over-preparing. 🙂

      Thanks for dropping by Scotty.

      Regards,
      JON
