Abra, tucked away in the Cordillera region of Northern Luzon, may not always be in the spotlight—but those who make the journey to this province often leave with unforgettable memories.
Rich in tradition, blessed with natural beauty, and deeply rooted in indigenous culture, Abra is a place where festivals go beyond spectacle—they tell the story of its people.
I’ve always believed that the best way to understand a place is through its celebrations. In Abra, every festival is a window into its heritage, livelihood, and the strong sense of community that binds its towns and tribes. Here are some of the province’s most vibrant and meaningful festivals:

Abrenian Kawayan Festival
📍 Where: Bangued and other towns across Abra
📅 When: Leading up to March 9 (Abra’s founding anniversary)
If you visit Abra in early March, you’re in for a treat. The Abrenian Kawayan Festival is the province’s biggest celebration, marking its official founding and celebrating its journey since gaining independence from Ilocos Sur in 1917.
What makes this festival special is how it embraces the symbolism of kawayan (bamboo)—a reflection of the people’s resilience and adaptability. Imagine floats covered in bamboo and local textiles, glowing during the magical Parade of Lights (Silnag). You’ll also see local beauty pageants, a huge trade fair showcasing Abra’s best bamboo products and handwoven fabrics, and even celebrations of International Women’s Day on March 8.
It’s a perfect mix of heritage and hope—an inspiring time to be in Abra.

Dapil Festival
📍 Where: Bangued
📅 When: February (varies each year)
If you’ve got a sweet tooth and a love for local food traditions, the Dapil Festival is for you. Celebrated in February, this festival is all about sugarcane—a crop that has long shaped the agricultural life of Bangued. “Dapil” refers to the traditional way of extracting sugarcane juice using a dadapilan, and this process takes center stage during the celebration.
There’s a bustling trade fair where you can try basi (sugarcane wine), molasses, vinegar, and cascaron—my personal favorite, which is a chewy, sticky rice and molasses snack. Add in street dancing, sports competitions, and a grand parade, and the Dapil Festival becomes a lively showcase of Abra’s farming pride and culinary creativity.
Begnas Festival
📍 Where: Tubo, Abra
📅 When: December (typically around December 19–21)
One of the most soul-stirring festivals I’ve learned about is the Begnas Festival, held by the indigenous Maeng tribe in Tubo. It’s not flashy or commercial—it’s raw, spiritual, and heartfelt. Begnas is their way of giving thanks to Kabunyan, their Supreme Being, for the harvest, protection, and blessings received throughout the year.
Over three days, you’ll witness tribal rituals, traditional dances like the tadek, and the rhythmic sound of gongs echoing across the mountains. Farmers showcase their produce, woven garments, honey, and muscovado. It’s a festival grounded in gratitude and the values of community and hard work.
If you’re someone who wants to witness authentic indigenous culture, this festival is a rare and moving experience.
Tingguian Festival
📍 Where: Various municipalities with Tingguian communities
📅 When: Often integrated with the Abrenian Kawayan Festival; standalone dates may vary
This festival is a heartfelt tribute to one of Abra’s most prominent indigenous groups—the Tingguian, also known as the Itneg. Celebrated either on its own or as a vibrant part of the Abrenian Kawayan Festival, the Tingguian Festival puts the spotlight on their rich traditions, colorful attire, and time-honored rituals.
You’ll get to witness graceful dances, soul-stirring chants, and traditional music that transports you into the cultural world of the Tingguian people. It’s not just a show—it’s a way for them to pass on their stories, values, and ancestral wisdom to younger generations and curious visitors. If you’re eager to experience something truly authentic and indigenous, this is a celebration not to miss.

Rice Festival
📍 Where: Across the province of Abra
📅 When: Held annually; dates may vary by municipality
Rice is life in many parts of the Philippines, and Abra is no different. The Rice Festival is a joyous celebration that gives thanks for a bountiful harvest. It’s the community’s way of acknowledging the hard work of local farmers and their deep connection to the land.
One of the highlights? The lively street dances, where performers—often schoolchildren and farmers—dress in bright, colorful costumes and dance in celebration of abundance. The whole community comes together in gratitude, creating an atmosphere that feels warm, inclusive, and deeply rooted in tradition.
Salong Festival
📍 Where: Abra Province
📅 When: Dates are not widely publicized, but it’s known as a unity celebration
Last but certainly not least is the Salong Festival—a celebration of unity. “Salong” is all about bringing people together, and this festival reflects just that: harmony among Abra’s diverse municipalities and ethnic groups.
Whether it’s through sports, cultural exchanges, or community activities, the focus is on togetherness. It’s a reminder that despite differences in language, tradition, or geography, the people of Abra stand united. And for visitors, it’s a chance to witness and be part of this strong communal spirit.
A Tapestry of Tradition and Togetherness
The festivals of Abra are more than just lively events—they’re living traditions that tell stories of survival, strength, gratitude, and identity. Whether you’re dancing with the locals during the Rice Festival, learning about Tingguian rituals, or watching bamboo floats parade through Bangued, you’re not just observing—you’re being invited in.
Abra may be tucked away in the mountains, but its spirit is anything but quiet. It speaks through its songs, its food, its dances, and its warm-hearted people. So if you’re looking for an adventure steeped in culture and connection, plan your trip around one of these beautiful festivals—and let Abra welcome you with open arms.
