SUBLIAN FESTIVAL: Batangas’ Colorful Dance and Cultural Extravaganza

When I first heard about the Sublian Festival, I knew I had to experience it for myself. This vibrant celebration, held in Batangas City, showcases local culture and traditions in a truly unique way.

Initiated by Batangas City Mayor Eduardo Dimacuha in 1988, the festival commemorates the city’s founding and seeks to revive the traditional subli dance.

The Tradition of the Subli Dance

The subli dance is a captivating and unique experience. Originating during the Spanish colonial period, it’s a ceremonial dance honoring the Holy Cross, particularly in the towns of Bauan and Agoncillo. It is performed as a tribute to both the Holy Cross and the Sto. Niño ofBatangas City.

Watching the subli dance is mesmerizing. Male dancers shuffle and strike the ground with bamboo sticks, while female dancers move gracefully with intricate wrist and finger movements. They often wear small-brimmed hats and colorful scarves called alampay. Accompanied by drums and chanting, the dance creates a powerful, ceremonial atmosphere.

Sublian sa Kalye (Street Dancing)
One of the festival’s most exciting highlights is the Sublian sa Kalye. During this event, participants take to the streets to perform the subli dance. Around a thousand students usually join in, transforming the streets into a vibrant display of traditional dance and music.

Lupakan and Awitan
Another event that stands out is the Lupakan and Awitan, held at the People’s Quadrangle. Here, locals prepare a traditional snack called nilupak and enjoy folk songs and dances. It’s a delightful way to immerse yourself in Batangueño culture and sample some local delicacies.

The festival also features a variety of traditional Batangas activities. These include the Santacruzan (a May flower festival), luwa (a declamation to a saint), folk dance competitions, and other cultural events that celebrate Batangueño customs and traditions.

Patimpalak Sublian Dance Competition
The Patimpalak Sublian Dance Competition is a key highlight of the festival. Participants compete to deliver their best subli performances, and the event concludes with a ritual returning the images of the Holy Child and Holy Cross to the church. It’s a deeply symbolic way to end the festival.

Malunggayan Fiesta
A special day is dedicated to celebrating the malunggay (moringa) plant, known for its nutritional benefits. The Malunggayan Fiesta underscores the importance of this local superfood in Batangueño cuisine.
