Though our primary purpose for traveling to Isabela was to cover the Bambanti Festival, the Isabela Provincial Tourism graciously arranged for us to tour around the province as well. One of the most remarkable stops on our itinerary was the Our Lady of Atocha Church in the town of Alicia.
After visiting Magat Dam in Ramon, we made a brief stopover to purchase some balatong (munggo) products before heading to Alicia to visit the Our Lady of Atocha church.
Situated along the Maharlika Highway in Alicia, the church’s architecture is impossible to miss as you pass by. Upon parking within the church’s vicinity, its grandeur became even more apparent. It’s no wonder this church is a prime pilgrimage destination in Isabela, particularly during the Holy Week. Its design is characterized by antique Castilian architecture, reminiscent of old Spanish churches. The Department of Tourism has even recognized it as a religious tourist attraction.
Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Atocha, also known as Our Lady of Atocha, the church holds significant historical and religious importance in the region. Originally constructed by the Spaniards in the 18th century, it was completed in 1849.
I found solace in gazing at the church’s facade while seeking shelter under the shade of trees in front. A statue of Our Lady of Atocha graces the church’s entrance on the side.
Of course, my visit wouldn’t have been complete without stepping inside. It’s a personal tradition of mine to enter churches and offer solemn prayers. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as I was grappling with personal struggles at the time. I desperately needed the peace and solitude that the church provided.
Inside, the design also reflects an old Spanish aesthetic, with the statue of Our Lady of Atocha displayed at the center.
Upon exiting, it was time for group photos with my fellow media personnel covering the festival, who also participated in the tour.
After bidding farewell to Our Lady of Atocha Church, we explored another church in Isabela. Then proceeded to Isabela Sports Complex to cover the street dance competition.
