KAMUNDAGAN FESTIVAL of Naga City (Camarines Sur)

A few months ago, I had the chance to travel to Naga City and witness the celebration of the Kamundagan Festival.

Since I began making videos about festivals last year, I had anticipated experiencing the Kamundagan Festival in Naga. Kamundagan, which means birth, celebrates the birth of Christ. It is a month-long December celebration, coinciding with Christmas, featuring various events such as parades, dancing competitions, concerts, banchettos, and more.

I departed from PITX at night and embarked on a 12-hour journey to Naga. Upon my early morning arrival, I took the opportunity to explore Naga City while awaiting my hotel check-in at noon. I wandered through the city’s Naga Market, plazas, and churches.

After checking in at Rusville Hotel, I took some time to rest and even managed to take a nap until the afternoon, just in time for the parade.

The parade venue was within walking distance from my hotel, leading to the main road where the street parade was scheduled to take place.

Kamundagan Festival Overview

The Kamundagan Festival started in 1992 during the tenure of Mayor Jesse Robredo, the former DILG Secretary and late husband of former Vice President Leni Robredo. As mentioned, Kamundagan signifies birth and commemorates Christ’s birth or Christmas.

Initially coinciding with Naga City’s charter day on December 15, the charter day was later moved to June 18. However, the celebration of the Kamundagan Festival remained and has since become a December tradition in Naga.

The parade featured participation from various barangays of the city, each with its performers. Bands from different schools and universities further energized the parade.

Having a fondness for live bands and majorette performances during fiestas, I enjoyed the parade. The performers’ costumes were vibrant and festive. Watching the parade made me appreciate the uniqueness of celebrating Christmas in Naga. With the Kamundagan Festival, the Christmas holidays felt even more special.

Dance Presentation

Following the parade, all participating barangays had the opportunity to perform and compete for the championship. This year, the winning contingent earned more than a million worth of projects for their barangay. They showcased impressive dance routines accompanied by elaborate and colorful costumes.
