Manila to Legazpi by Bus 2019 (Fare & Schedule)

I’ve been to Legazpi, Albay once during the time when I joined a group of travelers explore the Bicol region.

Our first destination was Matnog in Sorsogon. We spent the night at Subic Beach in one of the islands in Matnog, then next day we traveled further the rest of Albay visiting more towns in the province, until reaching Legazpi City at night.

Legazpi is like the regional hub of Bicol and also the gateway to some awesome destinations in the region. In fact, the city has a lot of attractions that has the mighty Mayon volcano as the backdrop. I remember my first night in Legazpi was quite interesting. We had our dinner at First Colonial Grill. Of course, we tried some of the delectable Bicol dishes like Bicol Express and Laing. Then, we tried the famous sili ice cream for our dessert.

We spent our night in one the popular hostels in Legazpi – The Mayon Backpackers Hostel. The next day, we started exploring Legazpi and its nearby town of Daraga.

Our first stop was Our Lady of the Gate Parish or the Daraga Church. This church has an interesting story and historical value not only for Bicolanos but for us Filipinos. During the 1800’s Mayon volcano erupted and destroyed a lot of structures in the area. One of these was Cagsawa church. People then decided to build a church on top of a hill as a sign of their strong Catholic faith challenged by numerous disasters and earthquakes. That’s when the Daraga church was built.

Today, the church is not only a sign of the Bicolano’s strong faith but also has the most stunning view of the Mayon volcano. We were lucky to witness Mayon volcano at its fullness when we were there, as there are times that perfect cone volcano could be covered with clouds. The view was amazing so we then took a lot of pictures.

Another good attraction in Legazpi is the Lignon Hill Natural Park. We thought that the view of Mayon volcano at Daraga church was already the best we could find in the city, until we reached Lignon Hill.

This was a former PHIVOLCS Observatory Center that monitors the activity of the volcano, until it was reconstructed for Tourism in the past years. Lignon Hill is the place to get the best view of Mayon, as well as a place to experience some adventure activities like zipline and rapeling.

Probably the most popular attraction near Legazpi is the Cagsawa Ruins. This is popular for tourist to take some wacky photos while playing around with creativity. Although this has become a popular attraction, we need to understand that hundred of years ago, there was a church in this area that served as the center of people’s faith at that time. Now, only the belfry is the silent witness of the Mayon volcano’s havoc.

Currently, the Cagsawa Ruins Park is managed by the National Museum of the Philippines and the local tourism of Daraga.

Tourist Spots in Legazpi, Albay 

Legazpi is the gateway of Bicol to other attractions in the region. One of the most popular adventure activities in Legazpi is the ATV Mayon Adveture. Just a few kilometers in its neighboring town of Daraga, everyone can enjoy the Cagsawa Ruins and Daraga Church.
