BDO American Express Explorer Credit Card: Complete Guide for Filipino Travelers

Travel rewards can become confusing very quickly.

A bank may advertise that its card earns several points for every purchase, but those points do not always convert directly into airline miles. You may need to study a rewards table, calculate conversion ratios, and meet a high minimum redemption before knowing what your spending is actually worth.

The BDO American Express Explorer Credit Card keeps the main earning system refreshingly simple:

Every ₱30 in qualified spending earns one Membership Rewards point, and one point converts into one airline mile.

You can transfer those points to six airline loyalty programs or convert them into points with Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy. The card also includes unlimited complimentary access to participating airport lounges, a low 1.85% foreign-exchange conversion fee, family travel insurance, purchase protection, an anniversary bonus, and an automatic annual-fee waiver after meeting the required spending.

Of course, no travel card is perfect. American Express acceptance may be more limited than Visa or Mastercard acceptance, the current travel policy provides only modest medical coverage, and the regular annual fee is ₱4,000.

Let us take a closer look at how the BDO American Express Explorer works, how many miles you can earn, where you can transfer your points, and whether the card deserves a place in your travel wallet.

Updated August 6, 2026: Card benefits, fees, insurance provisions, transfer partners, and lounge arrangements can change. Confirm important details with BDO before applying or booking a trip.

What Is the BDO American Express Explorer Credit Card?

The American Express Explorer is a Philippine-issued travel rewards credit card provided by BDO Unibank under its partnership with American Express.

It is designed for travelers who want a straightforward mileage rate without being permanently tied to a single airline.

The card earns one Membership Rewards point for every ₱30 in eligible spending. Each point can be converted into one mile with any of the card’s six airline partners. Points do not expire while the account remains active and in good standing. They may also be converted into Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy points. (American Express)

Its main travel benefits include:

  • One airline mile for every ₱30 qualified spend
  • Six airline transfer partners
  • Two hotel loyalty partners
  • Non-expiring Membership Rewards points
  • A 1.85% foreign-exchange conversion fee
  • Unlimited complimentary access to participating airport lounges
  • Family travel insurance of up to ₱10 million
  • Purchase protection for eligible retail purchases
  • 2,000 anniversary bonus points after meeting the spending requirement
  • Automatic annual-fee waiver after ₱450,000 in annual spending
  • Free first-year membership for principal and supplementary cards (American Express)

How the Membership Rewards Program Works

The Explorer earns:

One Membership Rewards point for every ₱30 in qualified spending.

The effective airline-mile earning rate is also:

₱30 qualified spend = one airline mile

You do not need to remember different rates for dining, groceries, hotels, foreign transactions, or online purchases. Qualified charges generally earn at the same rate. (American Express)

Sample mileage calculations

Here is approximately how many points and airline miles you could earn:

Qualified spendingMembership Rewards pointsEquivalent airline miles
₱30,0001,0001,000 miles
₱60,0002,0002,000 miles
₱120,0004,0004,000 miles
₱240,0008,0008,000 miles
₱300,00010,00010,000 miles
₱450,00015,00015,000 miles
₱600,00020,00020,000 miles
₱1,000,000About 33,333About 33,333 miles

Suppose you charge the following expenses during one year:

  • ₱120,000 on groceries
  • ₱60,000 on dining
  • ₱80,000 on airline tickets
  • ₱100,000 on hotels
  • ₱40,000 on online purchases
  • ₱50,000 on other qualified spending

Your total would be ₱450,000.

That could earn approximately:

₱450,000 ÷ ₱30 = 15,000 Membership Rewards points

The same ₱450,000 would also satisfy the current annual spending requirement for the automatic membership-fee waiver. (American Express)

How Points Are Calculated

BDO calculates points from each eligible charge rather than combining all transactions at the end of the billing cycle. Fractions are rounded down.

For foreign-currency purchases, points are based on the Philippine-peso amount appearing on the billing statement after the transaction has been converted. (BDO)

For example:

  • A ₱900 transaction earns 30 points.
  • A ₱929 transaction also earns 30 points.
  • A ₱930 transaction earns 31 points.

Because each purchase is calculated separately, the leftover amount below the next ₱30 threshold does not carry over to another transaction.

This creates a small amount of rounding loss, especially when you make many low-value purchases, but the overall effect is unlikely to be significant for most cardholders.

Which Transactions Earn Membership Rewards Points?

Eligible charges under the current Membership Rewards terms generally include:

  • Regular retail purchases
  • Mail-order and telephone-order purchases
  • Online shopping
  • Supermarket purchases
  • Drugstore purchases
  • Fuel transactions
  • Eligible service-merchant transactions
  • Buy Now, Pay Later purchases
  • Eligible installment transactions

Installment purchases earn points based on each monthly amortization posted to the account. For Purchase Convert or Balance Convert transactions, points earned from the original straight charge can be deducted and earned again gradually through the posted monthly installments. (BDO)

Supplementary-card spending also earns points, which are automatically pooled into the principal cardholder’s Membership Rewards account. (BDO Philippines)

Transactions That Do Not Earn Points

The current program excludes several types of transactions, including:

  • Cash advances and Express Cash transactions
  • Balance transfers and cash-installment facilities
  • Auto Charge and Charge on Demand bill payments
  • Casino, betting, and gambling transactions
  • Cryptocurrency purchases
  • Remittances and money transfers
  • E-wallet loading and cash-in transactions
  • Finance charges and interest
  • Late-payment charges
  • Cash-advance fees
  • Card-replacement fees
  • Installment processing and availment fees
  • Most annual and monthly card membership fees
  • Refunded, reversed, or disputed purchases

BDO may change the list of eligible and excluded transactions through notices in statements, emails, text messages, or website announcements. (BDO)

The practical lesson is simple: use the card for normal retail purchases rather than cash-like transactions.

Do Membership Rewards Points Expire?

BDO states that Membership Rewards points do not have a regular expiration date while the card account remains active and in good standing. (BDO Philippines)

This is an important advantage over airline cards that automatically deposit miles into a frequent-flyer account.

Keeping points with BDO allows you to wait while you:

  • Choose the most useful airline program
  • Search for award-seat availability
  • Compare mileage requirements
  • Save for a larger redemption
  • Avoid starting an airline program’s mileage-expiration period too early

Once you convert points into airline miles, the miles become subject to the airline program’s own expiration and account rules.

What happens when you cancel or convert the card?

You should redeem your points before changing the Explorer to another American Express card. BDO may forfeit unused points during a card conversion unless it permits a transfer as an exception.

Following voluntary cancellation, unused points may remain redeemable for up to 60 days, but airline and hotel transfers are no longer allowed during that period. Only qualifying non-travel rewards may be available. Points are immediately forfeited when BDO involuntarily cancels the account. (BDO)

American Express Explorer Airline Partners

The 2026 Explorer Rewards Catalogue lists six airline loyalty partners:

  1. Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles
  2. Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  3. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  4. Delta SkyMiles
  5. Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus
  6. Malaysia Airlines Enrich

For all six programs:

One Explorer Membership Rewards point equals one airline mile or loyalty point.

The minimum transfer is 1,000 points. Mabuhay Miles transfers must be made in increments of 1,000 points, while the other airline programs generally allow additional transfers in increments of 500 points. (BDO)

Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles

Mabuhay Miles is the most practical choice for many Filipino travelers who regularly use Philippine Airlines.

Explorer points convert at:

1,000 Membership Rewards points = 1,000 Mabuhay Miles

The minimum and transfer increment are both 1,000 points. (BDO)

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Asia Miles may be useful when you frequently fly Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong or understand the program’s partner-airline redemption opportunities.

The conversion is:

1,000 Explorer points = 1,000 Asia Miles

After the initial 1,000-point minimum, transfers can generally be made in 500-point increments. (BDO)

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

KrisFlyer miles may be used for qualifying Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Star Alliance, and other partner-airline rewards under the program’s rules.

The conversion is:

1,000 Explorer points = 1,000 KrisFlyer miles

Transfers after the minimum can be made in 500-point increments. (BDO)

Delta SkyMiles

The inclusion of Delta SkyMiles gives the Explorer a US-airline transfer option that is not commonly offered by Philippine credit cards.

The conversion is:

1,000 Explorer points = 1,000 Delta SkyMiles

Additional transfers follow 500-point increments. (BDO)

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus

Royal Orchid Plus may appeal to travelers who regularly fly Thai Airways through Bangkok.

The conversion is:

1,000 Explorer points = 1,000 Royal Orchid Plus miles

Additional transfers can generally be made in 500-point increments. (BDO)

Malaysia Airlines Enrich

Malaysia Airlines Enrich provides another Southeast Asian airline option, particularly for people who fly through Kuala Lumpur.

The conversion is:

1,000 Explorer points = 1,000 Enrich points

Additional transfers are allowed in 500-point increments under the current catalogue. (BDO)

Hotel Loyalty Transfer Partners

The Explorer is not limited to airline miles. You can also convert points to two major hotel loyalty programs.

Hilton Honors

The current conversion rate is:

1,000 Membership Rewards points = 1,250 Hilton Honors points

Hilton Honors covers brands that include Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, Canopy, Hampton, and other participating properties. (BDO)

Marriott Bonvoy

The current conversion rate is:

1,000 Membership Rewards points = 970 Marriott Bonvoy points

Marriott Bonvoy includes brands such as Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, St. Regis, and The Ritz-Carlton. (BDO)

Are hotel transfers worth it?

That depends on the hotel, travel dates, cash price, and number of points required.

Before converting, compare:

  • The hotel’s cash rate
  • The number of hotel points required
  • Taxes and fees
  • Whether the booking qualifies for elite benefits
  • Whether a promotion is available
  • The value of keeping your points for an airline transfer

A 1:1 airline transfer may sometimes provide better value, but hotel points can be useful when airfare is affordable and accommodation is the more expensive part of your trip.

How to Redeem Explorer Points

The current Explorer catalogue allows points redemption through BDO Pay or BDO’s rewards platform.

The basic process is:

  1. Open BDO Pay.
  2. Select your American Express Explorer account.
  3. Choose Redeem Rewards Points.
  4. Select an airline or hotel loyalty program.
  5. Provide your loyalty membership number.
  6. Confirm the number of points you want to transfer.
  7. Wait for the conversion to be processed.

Airline miles and hotel loyalty points are normally credited within seven to 21 banking days from the redemption date. The loyalty account must be registered in the principal cardholder’s own name. (BDO)

Once a redemption has been accepted, it generally cannot be canceled or transferred back into your BDO Membership Rewards account. (BDO)

Should You Transfer Points Immediately?

Usually, it is better to wait until you have a clear use for the miles.

Before transferring, check:

  • Award-seat availability
  • The required number of airline miles
  • Taxes and carrier-imposed charges
  • Mileage expiration
  • Cancellation and rebooking policies
  • Transfer processing time
  • Whether a cash fare would provide better value

Remember that transfers can take up to 21 banking days. This card is therefore not ideal for a last-minute award booking when the flight might disappear before the miles arrive. (BDO)

Another important detail is that BDO’s current Membership Rewards terms state that certain American Express travel insurance benefits may not apply to flights booked using frequent-flyer tickets, including flights obtained from points converted through Membership Rewards. Review the insurance rules before relying on complimentary coverage for an award ticket. (BDO)

Anniversary Bonus: 2,000 Extra Points

The Explorer provides 2,000 anniversary Membership Rewards points when the cardholder reaches ₱600,000 in annual spending.

Transactions from the principal card, supplementary cards, and eligible linked American Express Virtual Cards count toward the annual total. (American Express)

Because each Explorer point equals one airline mile, the bonus can be converted into:

2,000 additional airline miles

The ₱600,000 annual requirement averages approximately ₱50,000 per month.

Regular spending from the ₱600,000 would already earn around 20,000 points. Adding the anniversary bonus brings the potential total to approximately:

22,000 Membership Rewards points

That assumes all transactions qualify and ignores any per-transaction rounding.

Do not spend unnecessarily just to receive 2,000 bonus miles. The benefit is worthwhile when the ₱600,000 threshold is reached through purchases you were already planning.

Automatic Annual-Fee Waiver

The regular principal card annual fee is ₱4,000, while each supplementary card costs ₱2,000 per year.

Both principal and supplementary membership fees are waived during the first year. After that, the principal fee is automatically waived when annual spending reaches at least ₱450,000. (American Express)

The waiver threshold averages:

₱450,000 ÷ 12 = ₱37,500 per month

This makes the Explorer’s annual fee relatively manageable for someone who plans to use it as a primary card.

There are two different spending targets to remember:

  • ₱450,000 per year: Automatic annual-fee waiver
  • ₱600,000 per year: 2,000 anniversary points

You can qualify for the fee waiver without reaching the anniversary-bonus requirement.

Unlimited Complimentary Airport Lounge Access

BDO advertises unlimited complimentary access at participating partner airport lounges whenever an eligible Explorer cardholder travels overseas. (American Express)

Under BDO’s March 2026 Marhaba Lounge terms, eligible principal and supplementary Explorer cardholders receive complimentary cardholder-only access at:

  • Marhaba Lounge in the international departures area of NAIA Terminal 1
  • Marhaba Lounge at Clark International Airport Terminal 2

The Marhaba Lounge at NAIA Terminal 3 closed for renovation effective April 14, 2026. Because lounge partnerships and operating status can change, check BDO’s current list before your flight.

Is there a limit on the number of visits?

The benefit is described as unlimited, meaning there is no published annual allocation such as two, four, or ten visits.

However, current Marhaba terms allow complimentary access only once within a 24-hour period. Each stay is limited to three hours. Additional time and lounge re-entry can result in charges.

Can you bring a guest for free?

The standard Explorer entitlement covers the cardholder only.

A spouse, friend, or other travel companion will generally be charged the lounge’s applicable guest rate. Children aged two and below may enter free under the current Marhaba rules.

What do you need to enter?

Present:

  • An active and unexpired BDO American Express Explorer
  • A same-day international boarding pass
  • Your passport

The lounge may process a ₱1 authorization to validate the card and immediately reverse it. Entry remains subject to space availability and lounge policies.

How valuable is the lounge benefit?

This benefit is useful when you frequently depart internationally from NAIA Terminal 1 or Clark.

It becomes less valuable when:

  • You normally fly from NAIA Terminal 2 or Terminal 3
  • You expect complimentary guest entry
  • You primarily want lounge access outside the Philippines
  • The participating lounge is closed, full, or inconveniently located

The Explorer’s lounge benefit should not be confused with a global Priority Pass or DragonPass allowance. The current published benefit centers on BDO’s participating local partner lounges.

Low 1.85% Foreign-Exchange Conversion Fee

The Explorer charges a 1.85% foreign-exchange conversion rate on qualifying foreign charges.

For transactions made in currencies other than US dollars, American Express first converts the amount into US dollars. The applicable exchange conversion rate is then applied when the transaction is converted for billing. Of the conversion charge, 1% is retained by American Express. (American Express)

A 1.85% rate is lower than the charges of many Philippine credit cards that impose foreign-currency fees of around 2.5% to more than 3%.

Sample foreign-currency cost comparison

For overseas spending equivalent to ₱100,000:

Foreign-currency feeApproximate fee
1.85%₱1,850
2.50%₱2,500
3.00%₱3,000
3.50%₱3,500

Compared with a card charging 3.5%, the Explorer could save approximately:

₱3,500 − ₱1,850 = ₱1,650

At ₱300,000 in annual foreign-currency purchases, the approximate difference becomes ₱4,950—more than the Explorer’s regular ₱4,000 annual fee.

Actual peso billing will depend on American Express’s exchange rate and the transaction-posting date.

Pay in the Destination’s Local Currency

When a foreign merchant asks whether you want to pay in Philippine pesos or the destination’s local currency, select the local currency in most situations.

For example:

  • Choose Thai baht in Thailand.
  • Choose Japanese yen in Japan.
  • Choose Singapore dollars in Singapore.
  • Choose South Korean won in South Korea.
  • Choose US dollars in the United States.

Choosing Philippine pesos can activate dynamic currency conversion. The merchant’s payment provider selects the rate before sending the transaction to BDO, and BDO’s fee disclosure notes that transactions converted by third parties use rates chosen by those third parties. (BDO)

Always inspect the currency displayed on the payment terminal before confirming the charge.

Complimentary Family Travel Insurance

The Explorer includes complimentary family travel insurance with accidental-death and disablement coverage of up to ₱10 million for the eligible cardholder.

To qualify, the entire common-carrier fare must be paid using the eligible Explorer card. The current policy covers eligible domestic or international trips for a maximum of 100 days. (BDO)

The insurance applies to eligible principal and supplementary cardholders between 18 and 80 years old. Coverage may extend to a legal spouse aged 18 to 80 and as many as eight dependent children aged six weeks to 18, provided the policy’s travel and payment requirements are satisfied. (BDO)

Current travel insurance benefits

The April 2026–March 2027 policy schedule lists the following maximum benefits:

BenefitCurrent maximum
Cardholder accidental death or disablement₱10 million
Spouse accidental death or disablement₱2.5 million
Each dependent child₱500,000
Accidental burial₱30,000
Burns benefit₱50,000
Medical expenses₱20,000
Hospital cash₱700 daily, up to 20 days
Personal baggage₱5,000 per item, up to ₱35,000
Personal-effects extension₱50,000 per item; ₱250,000 annually
Baggage delayUp to ₱12,000 per person under the policy schedule
Personal money₱20,000
Document lossUp to ₱60,000
Travel delayUp to ₱12,000 per person under the policy schedule
Travel reroutingUp to ₱50,000
Travel misconnection₱2,500 per six hours, up to two payments
Personal liability₱2.5 million
Rental-vehicle excess₱50,000
Loss of credit card₱25,000

The exact calculation and family limits depend on the type and duration of the incident. (BDO)

What the current policy does not cover

Under the current schedule, the following benefits are marked as not applicable:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip curtailment
  • Flight overbooking
  • Repatriation of mortal remains
  • Purchased personal baggage and personal effects

This is an important limitation. The headline ₱10 million figure mainly refers to accident coverage rather than broad cancellation or medical protection. (BDO)

Is the medical coverage enough?

The current medical-expense limit is only ₱20,000.

That may not cover even a relatively simple emergency-room visit in a country with expensive healthcare. Travelers visiting destinations such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, or Europe should seriously consider purchasing a separate policy with higher medical, evacuation, repatriation, and cancellation coverage. (BDO)

The complimentary benefit is helpful, but it should be treated as an additional layer of protection—not automatically as a complete substitute for standalone travel insurance.

How to Request a Confirmation of Cover

An eligible cardholder automatically becomes covered after using the qualified card to pay the entire travel ticket, subject to the policy terms.

You can request a Confirmation of Cover for documentation or visa purposes by contacting BDO Insure or the insurance provider and providing:

  • The cardholder’s complete name
  • Eligible companions’ names and ages
  • The type of BDO card
  • Travel dates
  • Destination or destinations

BDO provides email and telephone channels for requesting the document. (BDO Philippines)

Request it well before departure so you have enough time to verify the names, dates, destinations, and coverage.

Purchase Protection

The Explorer also includes purchase protection for eligible retail purchases.

The current card page states that covered purchases may be insured against theft, loss, or damage occurring within 30 days of purchase, with limits of:

  • Up to ₱50,000 per item
  • Up to ₱250,000 per year

Claims remain subject to the insurance provider’s complete conditions, exclusions, documentation, and notification requirements. (American Express)

Keep receipts, billing statements, police reports, photographs, and other evidence that might be required when filing a claim.

American Express Virtual Card

Explorer principal cardholders can request an American Express Virtual Card for online purchases.

The Virtual Card uses a different card number and has a credit limit that sits within the overall limit of the main Explorer account. It can help reduce the need to expose the physical card number when shopping online. (American Express)

Eligible Virtual Card spending can also earn Membership Rewards points at the Explorer rate, and linked Virtual Card transactions count toward the annual spending calculation for the anniversary bonus. (American Express)

Installment and Financial-Flexibility Features

The Explorer provides access to BDO facilities such as:

  • Buy Now, Pay Later
  • Purchase Convert
  • Balance Convert
  • Balance Transfer
  • Cash Installment

Buy Now, Pay Later is available at participating merchants with terms that may range from three to 36 months. Purchase Convert can be used for qualifying recent purchases of at least ₱3,000 or US$200, while Balance Convert requires a qualifying outstanding balance of at least ₱10,000 or US$500. (American Express)

Installment facilities can be convenient, but not all offers are free. Review:

  • The monthly add-on rate
  • The processing or availment fee
  • The total amount payable
  • Pre-termination charges
  • Whether points are earned immediately or through monthly amortizations

A “low monthly rate” can still produce a substantial total financing cost.

Annual Fee and Other Charges

The American Express fee table revised in May 2026 lists:

  • Principal annual membership fee: ₱4,000
  • Supplementary annual membership fee: ₱2,000
  • Monthly interest rate: 3%
  • Cash-advance fee: ₱200 or US$3.20
  • Late-payment charge: ₱850 or the unpaid minimum amount due, whichever is lower
  • Lost-card replacement fee: ₱400 for a physical card
  • Virtual Card replacement fee: ₱250
  • Returned-check or insufficient Auto-Debit Arrangement fee: ₱1,250
  • Gambling or gaming fee: 5% of the transaction or ₱500, whichever is higher
  • Refund fee: 1% of the refund or ₱100, whichever is higher
  • Overseas card-delivery fee: ₱2,500 (BDO)

Fees can change after notice, so check the latest disclosure before using a cash, installment, or foreign-currency facility.

Why Paying the Full Balance Matters

Suppose you charge ₱60,000 and earn 2,000 airline miles.

Carrying that ₱60,000 balance for one month at a 3% monthly interest rate could result in roughly ₱1,800 in finance charges, although BDO’s actual calculation depends on balances, dates, and payments. (BDO)

Those 2,000 airline miles are unlikely to provide ₱1,800 in value.

The card works best when you:

  • Charge only purchases you can afford
  • Pay the entire statement balance by the due date
  • Avoid cash advances
  • Avoid e-wallet and cash-like transactions
  • Use installments only after comparing the total cost
  • Never spend unnecessarily just to earn miles

Travel rewards should be a bonus for normal spending—not compensation for borrowing at high interest.

BDO American Express Explorer Application Requirements

BDO currently publishes the following basic eligibility conditions:

  • Principal applicants must be 21 to 60 years old.
  • Supplementary applicants must be at least 13.
  • Applicants must be Filipino citizens or foreign nationals residing in the Philippines.
  • The minimum gross fixed monthly income is ₱66,000.
  • An applicant must be regularly employed or self-employed with a business operating for at least two years.
  • A mobile number or landline at the residence or workplace is required.
  • The residence or office should be in an area served by a BDO branch. (BDO Philippines)

The ₱66,000 monthly requirement is equivalent to approximately:

₱792,000 in gross fixed income per year

Meeting the income requirement does not guarantee approval. BDO will still review your employment or business stability, existing obligations, credit history, declared income, and overall capacity to pay.

Required Documents

For Filipino applicants

BDO accepts an eligible government-issued photo ID, such as:

  • Philippine Identification System ID
  • Passport
  • Driver’s license
  • SSS ID
  • Another acceptable government identification document (BDO Philippines)

For employed applicants

Required income documents generally include:

  • Latest income tax return or BIR Form 2316
  • Plus a recent full-month payslip, certificate of employment showing compensation, or qualifying statements from an existing credit card held for at least one year (BDO Philippines)

For self-employed applicants

BDO generally requires:

  • Latest income tax return
  • Audited financial statements covering at least two years
  • DTI or SEC business registration
  • Recent bank statements may also be submitted or requested (BDO Philippines)

Foreign applicants must provide additional employment, passport, visa, work-permit, or residency documentation appropriate to their status. (BDO Philippines)

How to Apply

You can submit an Explorer application through BDO’s online credit card application channel.

The general process is:

  1. Select the American Express Explorer.
  2. Complete the application form.
  3. Upload your identification and income documents.
  4. Submit the application.
  5. Wait for approval updates by text message or email.
  6. Receive a delivery notification after the card is released.
  7. Activate the card after receiving it. (BDO Philippines)

Use only BDO’s official application channels and never provide one-time passwords, passwords, or complete card security information to an unsolicited caller or message sender.

Advantages of the BDO American Express Explorer

1. Straightforward one-mile-per-₱30 rate

There is no complicated conversion formula. Every qualified point already equals one airline mile.

2. Six airline partners

The card offers options covering Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Delta, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines. (BDO)

3. Two hotel partners

You can use rewards for Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy instead of airline miles. (BDO)

4. Non-expiring bank points

Points can remain with BDO while you decide which travel program to use, provided the account remains eligible. (BDO)

5. Reasonable transfer minimum

The minimum airline transfer is only 1,000 points, substantially lower than the minimum required by some competing travel cards. (BDO)

6. Low foreign-exchange fee

The 1.85% conversion rate is competitive for international purchases. (American Express)

7. Unlimited participating lounge access

You are not limited to two or four local visits per year, although access is restricted to participating lounges and the cardholder’s entitlement. (BDO Philippines)

8. Automatic annual-fee waiver

Spending ₱450,000 during the year automatically waives the regular principal membership fee. (American Express)

9. First-year fee waiver

Principal and supplementary fees are waived during the first year. (American Express)

10. Purchase protection

Eligible purchases receive protection from theft, loss, or damage under the current insurance conditions. (American Express)

Possible Disadvantages

1. American Express is not accepted everywhere

BDO states that the card is accepted worldwide wherever American Express is recognized. The practical implication is that some merchants that accept Visa or Mastercard may not accept Amex, so carrying a backup card is sensible. (BDO Philippines)

2. Lounge access is geographically limited

The currently verified partner-lounge terms focus on Marhaba locations at NAIA Terminal 1 and Clark Terminal 2. It is not a broad global lounge membership.

3. No complimentary guest as a standard benefit

The Explorer entitlement covers only the eligible cardholder.

4. Modest medical insurance

The current medical-expense limit is only ₱20,000. (BDO)

5. No trip cancellation or curtailment benefit

Both are marked as not applicable under the current insurance schedule. (BDO)

6. Transfers are not instant

Airline and hotel points may take seven to 21 banking days to appear. (BDO)

7. Annual spending is needed for the fee waiver

You must put approximately ₱37,500 per month on the card to reach the ₱450,000 annual requirement.

8. Bonus earning is limited

Unlike category-focused cards, the Explorer does not offer an accelerated rate such as one mile per ₱12 on hotels or foreign spending.

Is the Explorer Good for Local Spending?

Yes.

One mile per ₱30 on qualified purchases is a competitive general earning rate, especially when you want to earn from:

  • Groceries
  • Restaurants
  • Fuel
  • Pharmacies
  • Shopping
  • Eligible installment purchases
  • Online transactions
  • Other ordinary retail expenses

Its consistent rate can make the Explorer easier to manage than a card with three or four different spending categories.

The card becomes particularly practical when your regular expenses are sufficient to reach the ₱450,000 annual-fee waiver without overspending.

Is It Good for Overseas Spending?

Yes, particularly because it combines:

  • One mile per ₱30
  • A 1.85% foreign-exchange fee
  • Complimentary participating lounge access
  • Travel insurance
  • Wide airline and hotel transfer choices

Some competing cards earn miles faster overseas, but the Explorer provides more transfer flexibility than a card tied to only one airline.

Its primary overseas limitation is acceptance. Carry a Visa or Mastercard as a backup, especially when visiting smaller businesses, local markets, transportation providers, or less tourist-oriented destinations.

Who Should Consider the Explorer?

The card may be a strong fit for:

  • Travelers who want a simple one-mile-per-₱30 rate
  • People who use different airlines
  • Philippine Airlines passengers
  • Singapore Airlines travelers
  • Cathay Pacific passengers
  • Delta, Thai Airways, or Malaysia Airlines customers
  • Travelers who want Hilton or Marriott transfer options
  • People who make regular foreign-currency purchases
  • Travelers departing internationally from NAIA Terminal 1 or Clark
  • Cardholders who can reach ₱450,000 in annual spending naturally
  • Families who want supplementary-card spending pooled into one points account

Who May Be Better Off With Another Card?

Another card may suit you better when:

  • You want a Visa or Mastercard that is accepted more widely.
  • You need several complimentary airport lounge visits overseas.
  • You want free lounge access for a guest.
  • You usually depart from NAIA Terminal 2 or Terminal 3.
  • You need substantial medical or trip-cancellation insurance.
  • You are loyal to an airline not included among the six partners.
  • You want an accelerated overseas or travel-category rate.
  • You cannot reach the annual-fee waiver requirement.
  • Your fixed monthly income is below the published minimum.

Tips for Maximizing the Card

Use it for qualified everyday spending

The one-mile-per-₱30 rate makes it suitable for local expenses, not just travel purchases.

Aim for the fee waiver naturally

Use regular planned expenses to reach ₱450,000. Do not make unnecessary purchases simply to avoid a ₱4,000 fee.

Keep points with BDO until needed

Wait until you have found an available flight or hotel reward before transferring.

Plan transfers in advance

Allow up to 21 banking days for airline or hotel points to appear.

Compare all six airline partners

The best partner may change depending on your destination, dates, taxes, and available award seats.

Consider hotel transfers

Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy points may be useful when accommodation is more expensive than airfare.

Pay in the destination’s currency

Avoid merchant-provided conversion into Philippine pesos.

Check the current lounge before departure

Verify the location, opening hours, renovation status, guest charges, and admission requirements.

Charge the complete travel fare

Pay the entire qualifying common-carrier ticket with the Explorer when you intend to rely on complimentary insurance.

Buy additional insurance when necessary

The complimentary policy’s medical coverage and cancellation benefits are limited.

Carry a backup Visa or Mastercard

This reduces the inconvenience of encountering a merchant that does not accept American Express.

Pay the entire statement balance

Interest charges can quickly cost more than the points, insurance, or lounge benefits you receive.

Is the BDO American Express Explorer Worth It?

The BDO American Express Explorer is worth considering when you want flexible travel rewards without a complicated mileage formula.

Its biggest strength is the combination of a straightforward earning rate and a good selection of transfer partners.

Every qualified ₱30 earns one point, and every point can become one airline mile. You can choose among six airline programs instead of committing your rewards to one airline from the moment you make a purchase. You can also transfer to Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy.

The 1.85% foreign-exchange fee is competitive, while the ₱450,000 annual-fee waiver makes the regular ₱4,000 fee manageable for someone who uses the card consistently.

The lounge benefit is useful, but it is not as extensive as the phrase “unlimited complimentary lounge access” may initially suggest. It applies only at participating partner locations, and the standard Explorer benefit does not include a free guest.

The travel insurance also needs to be understood carefully. The ₱10 million headline applies to accident protection, while medical expenses are limited to ₱20,000 and trip cancellation is not covered under the current schedule.

For many travelers, the biggest practical issue will be merchant acceptance. The card should ideally be paired with a Visa or Mastercard backup.

BDO American Express Explorer Credit Card

Final Thoughts

The BDO American Express Explorer is one of the more flexible travel rewards cards available in the Philippines.

It earns miles at a competitive and uncomplicated rate, offers six airline partners, includes two major hotel programs, charges a relatively low foreign-currency fee, and automatically waives its annual fee after a realistic spending target for premium-card users.

It is especially attractive for someone who wants to keep rewards flexible instead of automatically sending them to a single frequent-flyer program.

Still, the card should not be judged by rewards alone. Consider where you usually shop, which airports you use, whether your preferred merchants accept American Express, and whether the current travel insurance is sufficient for your destination.

Most importantly, pay the full statement balance by the due date. Used responsibly, the Explorer can turn ordinary spending into future flights and hotel stays. Used while carrying debt, its 3% monthly interest rate can cost far more than the travel rewards you earn.

Information is based on official BDO and American Express materials checked on August 6, 2026. Card fees, rewards rules, transfer partners, lounge arrangements, insurance provisions, promotions, and application requirements may change. Approval remains subject to BDO’s credit evaluation.
