Labor Day weekend is often treated as summer’s last big getaway in the United States, and 2026 is shaping up to be another busy one.
This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, creating a three-day weekend for many Americans. But the travel rush will begin much earlier. AAA is looking at the main Labor Day travel period as Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, and its latest booking data shows strong demand for road trips, flights, national parks, cruises and major cities.
If you’re planning to drive, fly or squeeze in one final summer vacation, timing could make a big difference.
There are certain hours when highways are expected to become especially congested. Airfares to popular U.S. destinations are also noticeably higher than last year, while gasoline prices are significantly more expensive than they were during Labor Day 2025.
Here’s a complete look at what travelers need to know for Labor Day weekend 2026.

When Is Labor Day 2026?
Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September each year.
In 2026, the holiday falls on:
| Holiday | Date |
|---|---|
| Labor Day | Monday, September 7, 2026 |
| Main holiday weekend | September 5–7 |
| Heavy travel period | September 3–7 |
For many travelers, though, the weekend effectively begins Thursday afternoon.
People who can take Friday off may turn the holiday into a four- or five-day vacation, which is one reason Thursday and Friday traffic can become especially difficult.
AAA says many travelers are using the weekend for cruises, national park visits, city breaks and European trips.
Labor Day 2026 Travel at a Glance
If you don’t want to go through the entire guide, here are the most important things to remember.
| Travel concern | What to know |
|---|---|
| Labor Day | Monday, September 7 |
| Worst driving day | Friday, September 4 is particularly difficult |
| Worst Friday driving hours | Noon to 8 p.m. |
| Best Friday departure | Before noon |
| Best Saturday departure | Before 10 a.m. |
| Sunday traffic | Relatively little nationwide holiday impact expected |
| Best Monday departure | Before noon |
| Worst Monday hours | 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. |
| No. 1 U.S. destination | Seattle |
| Other popular U.S. destinations | Orlando, Boston, Denver, New York |
| Average domestic round-trip airfare | About $750 in AAA booking data |
| Gas price entering September | Around $4.10 nationally |
| Busiest Hertz rental pickup day | Friday, September 4 |
The simplest advice?
If you’re driving, leave early.
That sounds obvious, but in 2026 the difference between leaving at 9 a.m. and leaving at 2 p.m. could mean spending considerably more time in traffic.
Best and Worst Times to Drive for Labor Day Weekend 2026
AAA’s Labor Day forecast incorporates traffic analysis from INRIX.
The general pattern is easy to understand: traffic gets worse once regular commuters and holiday travelers begin sharing the roads.
Thursday afternoon and Friday are therefore among the periods travelers should be most cautious about.
Thursday, September 3
Best time to drive:
Before 1 p.m.
Worst time to drive:
2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday is when many people will begin extending their holiday weekend.
The problem is that these vacationers will be leaving at roughly the same time millions of people are finishing their regular workday.
If your schedule allows it, getting on the road Thursday morning is much better than waiting until after work.
Friday, September 4
Best time to drive:
Before noon
Worst time to drive:
Noon to 8 p.m.
Friday has one of the longest predicted congestion windows of the entire weekend.
If you can leave early in the morning, do it.
Waiting until 3, 4 or 5 p.m. puts you right into the period when holiday travelers, local commuters and people starting weekend trips are all competing for road space.
Friday is also expected to be the busiest Labor Day weekend pickup day for Hertz rental cars.
Saturday, September 5
Best time to drive:
Before 10 a.m.
Worst time to drive:
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday morning is still a reasonable time to travel.
This may actually be a good strategy for people who aren’t trying to maximize every possible hour of the weekend.
Instead of sitting in Friday afternoon traffic, you could leave very early Saturday and arrive around lunchtime.
By early afternoon, however, roads are expected to become busier as day-trippers join longer-distance travelers.
Sunday, September 6
Sunday is the interesting day.
INRIX expects relatively little additional nationwide traffic impact compared with the other holiday travel days.
That doesn’t mean every highway will be empty.
Popular beaches, theme parks, national parks and tourist destinations can still experience significant local congestion.
But if you have flexibility, Sunday may be one of the better days for moving between destinations.
Monday, September 7
Best time to drive:
Before noon
Worst time to drive:
2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Labor Day itself brings the return-home rush.
A familiar scenario plays out every holiday weekend: everyone wants one final breakfast, beach trip, hike or attraction before driving home.
As a result, departures become concentrated in the afternoon.
If you’re ready to sacrifice a few hours at your destination, leaving before noon may save you a frustrating drive later.
AAA and INRIX’s nationwide guidance for the weekend is summarized below.
| Date | Best travel time | Worst travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Sept. 3 | Before 1 p.m. | 2–7 p.m. |
| Friday, Sept. 4 | Before noon | Noon–8 p.m. |
| Saturday, Sept. 5 | Before 10 a.m. | 1–5 p.m. |
| Sunday, Sept. 6 | Minimal added traffic expected | — |
| Monday, Sept. 7 | Before noon | 2–5 p.m. |
Where Will Labor Day Traffic Be Worst?
The nationwide recommendations are useful, but traffic conditions can vary dramatically depending on where you’re traveling.
INRIX also identified potentially troublesome routes around major U.S. metropolitan areas.
And some of the increases are substantial.
Labor Day 2026 Peak Traffic Routes
| Metro area | Route | Expected peak | Estimated travel time | Increase vs. normal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seattle | Seattle → Ellensburg, I-90 E | Monday 7:15 p.m. | 3h 14m | 121% |
| Boston | Boston → Providence, I-95 S | Friday 3:30 p.m. | 1h 32m | 105% |
| Washington, D.C. | Baltimore → Washington via BW Parkway | Thursday 4:45 p.m. | 1h 24m | 90% |
| Denver | Denver → Fort Collins, I-25 N | Thursday noon | 1h 39m | 81% |
| San Francisco | San Francisco → Sacramento, I-80 E | Friday 5:45 p.m. | 4h 40m | 81% |
| Portland | Eugene → Portland, I-5 N | Friday 3 p.m. | 3h 6m | 77% |
| Chicago | Indianapolis → Chicago, I-65 N | Friday 5:15 p.m. | 5h 16m | 76% |
| Los Angeles | Los Angeles → San Diego, I-5 S | Friday 6 p.m. | 5h 19m | 75% |
| New York | New York → Jersey Shore, Garden State Pkwy S | Thursday 4:15 p.m. | 2h 23m | 68% |
| Atlanta | Atlanta → Birmingham, I-20 W | Monday 7:30 p.m. | 3h 18m | 65% |
| Tampa | Tampa → Orlando, I-4 E | Friday 3:45 p.m. | 2h 56m | 65% |
| Philadelphia | Baltimore → Philadelphia, I-95 N | Friday 11 a.m. | 3h 14m | 57% |
| San Diego | San Diego → Palm Springs, I-15 N | Thursday 5:45 p.m. | 4h 12m | 50% |
| Houston | Galveston → Houston, I-45 N | Thursday 5 p.m. | 1h 25m | 39% |
| Detroit | Detroit → Grand Rapids, I-96 W | Thursday 4:45 p.m. | 3h 28m | 37% |
| Minneapolis | Minneapolis → Brainerd, US-169 N | Thursday 4:15 p.m. | 3h 34m | 32% |
The Seattle forecast really stands out.
The Seattle-to-Ellensburg trip could take more than twice as long as normal at the predicted Monday evening peak.
Boston travelers also need to pay attention. The Boston-to-Providence route could experience travel times around 105% above normal Friday afternoon.
Labor Day 2026 Flights: What Travelers Should Expect
Flying won’t necessarily help you escape the holiday crowds.
AAA says domestic round-trip airfare booked for Labor Day weekend is running about 2% higher than last year, averaging roughly $750.
And travelers heading to the most popular domestic Labor Day destinations are paying even more.
AAA’s bookings show fares to those leading destinations averaging close to $800 round trip, approximately 20% higher than the comparable period last year.
Interestingly, international airfare is moving in the opposite direction.
AAA says international round-trip flights booked for the holiday are averaging around $1,240, about 4% less than a year ago.
Average Labor Day 2026 airfare in AAA booking data
| Flight type | Average round-trip fare | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic flights | About $750 | +2% |
| Flights to top domestic destinations | Nearly $800 | +20% |
| International flights | About $1,240 | -4% |
Remember that these are averages from AAA booking data rather than guaranteed prices.
Your actual fare may be dramatically higher or lower depending on the route, airport, airline and booking date.
When Should You Arrive at the Airport?
Holiday weekends are not the time to test how quickly you can sprint from airport parking to your gate.
TSA generally advises travelers to arrive about two hours before their scheduled flight departure.
For Labor Day weekend, I’d be even more conservative if you’re using a large airport.
Consider adding extra time if you’re flying from places such as:
- Atlanta
- Dallas-Fort Worth
- Denver
- Chicago O’Hare
- Los Angeles
- New York JFK
- Newark
- Orlando
- Seattle
- Boston
Also remember that airport congestion isn’t limited to security.
You may encounter delays at:
parking garages → rental car returns → bag drops → airline counters → TSA checkpoints → airport trains → gates.
Giving yourself another 30 minutes is much less painful than watching your plane leave without you.
Watch Chicago O’Hare Closely
Chicago O’Hare deserves particular attention this year.
The FAA imposed summer 2026 scheduling limits at O’Hare after airlines had proposed more than 3,000 daily flights on peak days. The FAA capped daily operations at 2,708 between May 17 and October 24, citing concerns including gate constraints and construction.
The restrictions are designed to reduce excessive delays rather than cause them, but ORD remains one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs.
Anyone connecting through Chicago should still build some flexibility into their itinerary.
Consider an Early-Morning Flight
For busy weekends, I generally prefer early flights.
Why?
Because delays can compound throughout the day.
A late-afternoon flight may depend on an aircraft or crew that has already operated several previous segments. If one of those earlier flights encounters weather, congestion or operational problems, the delay can follow the aircraft throughout the day.
A 6 or 7 a.m. departure isn’t fun when your alarm goes off.
But reaching your destination before lunch often feels much better than spending Friday evening at an airport waiting for updates.
Labor Day 2026 Top U.S. Destinations
So where is everyone going?
AAA booking data gives us a fascinating picture of what Americans want from their final major summer weekend.
These are the top domestic destinations:
| Rank | Destination |
|---|---|
| 1 | Seattle, Washington |
| 2 | Orlando, Florida |
| 3 | Boston, Massachusetts |
| 4 | Denver, Colorado |
| 5 | New York, New York |
| 6 | Chicago, Illinois |
| 7 | Anaheim/Los Angeles, California |
| 8 | Las Vegas, Nevada |
| 9 | Anchorage, Alaska |
| 10 | Atlanta, Georgia |
There’s a little bit of everything here.
Theme parks? Orlando and Anaheim.
Big-city weekend? New York, Chicago and Boston.
Outdoor adventure? Denver and Anchorage.
Entertainment? Las Vegas.
Cruise gateway? Seattle.
And that last point helps explain why Seattle is No. 1.
Why Is Seattle So Popular for Labor Day 2026?
Seattle isn’t simply attracting travelers who want to spend three days in the city.
It’s also a major gateway for Alaska cruises.
AAA specifically notes strong interest in Alaska cruising among Labor Day travelers, which helps explain Seattle’s position at the top of the domestic destination rankings.
If you’re traveling through Seattle for a cruise, give yourself plenty of time.
Flying into the city on the same day your ship departs can be risky at any time of year, but particularly during a busy holiday weekend.
Orlando Remains a Labor Day Favorite
It’s probably no surprise to find Orlando near the top.
Between Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, family resorts and Central Florida attractions, the city remains one of America’s biggest leisure destinations.
Car rental demand is also expected to be high in Orlando over the weekend.
If you’re planning a theme-park vacation, don’t assume Labor Day weekend means the parks will be quiet simply because school has started in many parts of the country.
A three-day weekend can bring substantial crowds.
Boston Is Having a Big Labor Day Weekend
Boston ranks third in AAA’s domestic booking data.
The combination of history, restaurants, walkable neighborhoods and New England day trips makes it an attractive late-summer destination.
But travelers driving around the region should pay close attention to traffic.
INRIX says Boston-to-Providence traffic via I-95 South could take about 1 hour and 32 minutes at 3:30 p.m. Friday—roughly 105% longer than normal.
Denver Is a Gateway to National Parks and the Outdoors
Denver’s popularity isn’t only about Denver.
AAA says national parks are an important Labor Day travel trend, with visitors renting cars in Denver and Las Vegas before driving toward places such as Rocky Mountain, Arches, Zion and Grand Canyon national parks.
That makes Denver a natural starting point for an outdoor Labor Day trip.
Just don’t underestimate distances in the American West.
A place that looks nearby on a map can still mean several hours behind the wheel.
New York Is Still One of America’s Top Holiday Destinations
New York rounds out the top five.
Broadway, museums, shopping, Central Park, restaurants and major sporting events mean there’s never really a slow season in the city.
And some New Yorkers will be leaving rather than arriving.
INRIX expects the New York-to-Jersey Shore drive via the Garden State Parkway to be particularly difficult around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, with a projected journey of around 2 hours and 23 minutes, 68% longer than normal.
Top International Destinations for Labor Day 2026
Americans aren’t staying entirely within the United States.
AAA’s top international destinations are:
| Rank | Destination |
|---|---|
| 1 | Rome, Italy |
| 2 | Vancouver, Canada |
| 3 | London, England |
| 4 | Dublin, Ireland |
| 5 | Paris, France |
| 6 | Calgary, Canada |
| 7 | Barcelona, Spain |
| 8 | Athens, Greece |
| 9 | Amsterdam, Netherlands |
| 10 | Halifax, Canada |
Europe dominates the list.
Canada also performs particularly well, with Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax all appearing in the top 10.
Gas Prices Will Hurt More This Labor Day
Here’s the part road-trippers probably won’t enjoy.
Gasoline is considerably more expensive than it was during last year’s Labor Day weekend.
AAA says regular gasoline averaged about $3.19 per gallon on Labor Day 2025.
Entering September 2026, the national average is roughly $4.10 per gallon. AAA reported $4.0954 as its September 1 national average.
That’s a substantial difference for families taking long road trips.
Imagine a vehicle requiring 25 gallons during the trip.
At $3.19 per gallon, that’s about $79.75.
At $4.10, it’s roughly $102.50.
It’s not enough to cancel most vacations, but it adds another $20-plus to the budget—and considerably more if you’re driving farther or using a less fuel-efficient SUV or truck.
Why Are Gas Prices So High?
AAA says crude oil prices have remained elevated amid volatility surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
The organization reported that August 2026 was on pace to become the most expensive August ever at U.S. gas pumps, with the national average staying above $4 throughout the month.
Prices also vary enormously by state.
Drivers in states such as California, Hawaii and Washington are paying much more than travelers in many Southern and Midwestern states.
For a long road trip, it may be worth checking fuel prices along your route rather than automatically filling up near tourist areas or interstate exits.
Rental Cars Could Be Busy Too
Don’t forget about rental cars.
AAA’s Hertz data points to Friday, September 4 as the busiest pickup day of the Labor Day weekend.
High rental demand is also expected in:
- Denver
- Las Vegas
- Orlando
- Los Angeles
- Boston
If you already know you’ll need a rental, reserving in advance is much safer than arriving at the airport and hoping for a good walk-up price.
And if you’re renting at an airport, factor in the time needed to reach the rental car center. At some large airports, that process alone can take 20 to 40 minutes.
Road-Tripping? Check Your Car Before Leaving
A holiday road trip can quickly become miserable when your battery dies at a packed rest area.
AAA responded to more than 400,000 roadside-assistance calls during last year’s Labor Day weekend involving problems including dead batteries, flat tires and towing.
Before leaving, check:
Tires
Inspect your tire pressure and tread.
Don’t forget the spare tire if your vehicle has one.
Battery
If your battery has been showing signs of weakness, don’t wait until the holiday weekend to deal with it.
Fluids
Check engine oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid and other essential fluids.
Lights
Make sure brake lights, headlights and turn signals work properly.
Emergency supplies
Carry basics such as:
- drinking water
- snacks
- phone charger
- flashlight
- first-aid kit
- jumper cables or jump starter
- basic tools
- medications
- roadside assistance information
Those items may feel unnecessary—until the moment you actually need them.
How to Beat Labor Day Traffic
You can’t eliminate traffic, but you can improve your odds.
Leave earlier than everyone else
This is easily the biggest advantage.
If the predicted congestion window begins at 1 p.m., don’t aim for 12:45.
Leave at 9 or 10.
Avoid Friday afternoon if possible
Friday from noon until 8 p.m. is expected to be one of the worst nationwide travel periods.
If your schedule allows a Thursday morning or Saturday morning departure, seriously consider it.
Use real-time navigation
Check traffic before leaving and continue monitoring it during the trip.
An accident or construction closure can instantly change the best route.
Fill up before hitting tourist areas
Gas stations near resorts, theme parks, beaches and isolated highway exits can be both expensive and busy.
Pack food and water
A two-hour trip can become a four-hour trip during holiday traffic.
Plan accordingly.
Don’t chase every shortcut
Navigation apps sometimes route thousands of drivers onto tiny local roads.
Saving six theoretical minutes isn’t necessarily worth navigating unfamiliar neighborhoods or narrow mountain roads.
Flying? Here’s My Labor Day Airport Checklist
For anyone flying over the weekend, I’d keep things simple.
The day before
Confirm the flight in the airline app.
Check your seat.
Check your airport terminal.
Review baggage allowances.
Download your boarding pass.
Check the weather at your departure, connection and arrival cities.
Before leaving home
Check the flight again.
Look at airport traffic.
Confirm your parking reservation if you have one.
Make sure IDs and travel documents are easy to reach.
At the airport
Arrive with enough time for unexpected lines.
TSA advises travelers to arrive around two hours before departure.
For international flights or extremely busy airports, following your airline’s more conservative recommendation is wise.
What Happens If Your Flight Is Delayed or Canceled?
First, open your airline’s app.
You may be able to rebook before reaching an airline employee.
If a flight is canceled or significantly changed, passenger rights can depend on the circumstances and whether you choose to accept alternative transportation.
The U.S. Department of Transportation maintains consumer information covering airline delays, cancellations and related passenger protections.
Holiday weekends also make flexibility more important because later flights may already be full.
A canceled flight at 9 a.m. on a normal Tuesday may have several easy alternatives.
A canceled flight Friday afternoon before Labor Day?
That can be much harder.
Should You Travel on Sunday Instead?
If you’re flexible, Sunday deserves consideration.
INRIX isn’t expecting the same nationwide holiday traffic impact Sunday that it expects Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.
That makes September 6 potentially useful for travelers who:
- are changing hotels
- are driving between cities
- don’t need the full three-day weekend at one destination
- want to avoid Monday afternoon’s return rush
It’s not going to work for everyone, of course.
But sometimes changing the travel day matters more than changing the route.
Is Labor Day Monday a Good Day to Drive?
Yes—with one important condition.
Go early.
INRIX recommends traveling before noon Monday.
The tougher period is expected between 2 and 5 p.m.
Personally, I’d rather leave at 9 a.m., arrive home early afternoon and relax for the rest of the holiday than leave at 3 p.m. along with thousands of other people.
Best Strategy for Labor Day Weekend 2026
If I were planning a U.S. Labor Day road trip this year, this would be my ideal schedule:
Option 1: Maximum vacation time
Leave Thursday before noon.
Return Monday before noon.
You avoid much of Thursday evening’s departure rush and Monday afternoon’s homebound traffic.
Option 2: Avoid the worst traffic
Leave very early Saturday.
Return Sunday evening or Monday morning.
You lose some vacation time but potentially spend much less of it staring at brake lights.
Option 3: Flying
Choose an early outbound flight Thursday or Friday.
For the return, consider an early Monday flight—or Tuesday if you have the flexibility.

Final Thoughts: Leave Early and Expect Crowds
Labor Day weekend is supposed to be a break. You don’t want half of that break spent sitting on I-95, I-5 or I-90 wondering why you didn’t leave three hours earlier.
The biggest lesson from the Labor Day 2026 forecast is surprisingly simple: morning travel wins.
Thursday before 1 p.m. is better than Thursday evening.
Friday morning is much better than Friday afternoon.
Saturday before 10 a.m. beats Saturday afternoon.
And if you’re returning home Monday, getting on the road before noon could save you from joining the big afternoon rush.
Travelers should also budget more for transportation this year. Domestic airfare is higher in AAA’s booking data, and gasoline is sitting around $4.10 nationally as Labor Day approaches.
Still, Americans clearly aren’t giving up their end-of-summer vacations.
Seattle, Orlando, Boston, Denver and New York are attracting large numbers of domestic travelers. National parks and Alaska cruises are popular. And internationally, Americans are heading to destinations ranging from Rome and London to Vancouver and Paris.
So if you’re traveling this Labor Day weekend, there’s no need to panic about the crowds.
Just plan around them.
Leave earlier than you think you need to, give yourself extra airport time, keep an eye on traffic and weather, and don’t try to squeeze every last minute out of Monday afternoon.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a holiday weekend is simply to get home before everyone else does.
