MAUBANOG FESTIVAL: Celebrating Culture & Community in Mauban, Quezon

I’ve visited Mauban in the past, but during that trip, I went directly to the port and then to Cagbalete Island, the town’s most renowned island. I had an amazing time but missed out on exploring the town itself. As I traveled back to Manila, passing through the municipality’s streets and observing its residents, I told myself that I’d love to explore the town more deeply on my next visit.

Fast forward a few years, I was fortunate to be invited as one of the bloggers to cover the Maubanog Festival 2023. Celebrated every July, this main festival showcases the rich cultural and historical traditions of the Maubanons. It offers an opportunity for younger generations to connect with their heritage and understand its significance. Interestingly, “Maubanog” derives from the town’s name, Mauban, and the word “bangog,” meaning “high
spirit.

After about a four-hour journey, we arrived in Mauban and checked into our hotel, situated at the town’s heart. From here, we had a front-row seat to the vibrant street happenings and decorations, a visual delight.

The Maubanog Festival, spanning from July 10-15, is packed with captivating activities. While we couldn’t attend all of them, we certainly relished the major highlights.

Almusalang Bayan

One of my favorite activities. A long table set up in front of the municipal hall displayed an array of kakanin, pandesal, bread, and coffee, making for a communal breakfast with the Maubanons. We even joined in some singing to celebrate the festivities. And, notably, booths were offering free lambanog — what a festive treat!

Queen of Mauban

This event celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community of the province.

As our country adores pageants, Mauban’s version, specifically for the LGBTQIA+ community, didn’t disappoint. Ten candidates dazzled in both swimsuit and evening gown segments, celebrating Mauban’s LGBTQIA+ community’s beauty and talent. Being in the audience was a sheer joy.

Pabonggahan ng Arko

This is among Mauban’s most awaited competitions, with every barangay participating. The creativity and dedication evident in each barangay’s decorations were awe-inspiring.

Visit to Cagbalete

On our third day, we revisited Cagbalete Island, even staying at the Dona Choleng resort, the same place I’d been before, which made for a nostalgic experience. The island’s famed sandbar was our highlight, where we enjoyed its vast beauty and relished delectable seafood.

Paligsahan ng Sayaw!

Our last day saw the brilliant fusion of Maubanons’ youth talent at this dance competition. Set to popular Quezonian songs, high school students brought an infectious energy. Dr. Maria Pastrana National High School emerged as the champion, and our front-row seats made the experience even more memorable.

Apart from these, both locals and visitors enjoyed numerous other events like the Karera ng Bangka, Cultural Competition, Lyreband Competition, and more!

A Visit to Rizal Hill Park

Rizal Hill Park, once known as Calvario, stands as a symbolic landmark in Mauban, Quezon. As the highest point in town, its history dates back to the Spanish occupation when it was a focal point for religious ceremonies and gatherings.

During the turbulent times of the American and Japanese occupations, the hill served a strategic purpose as a crucial observation post, bearing silent witness to the many shifts in Philippine history. In 1925,  the park was built commemorating Dr. Jose Rizal. Today, visitors are treated to a panoramic view of Mauban.
