There was only one beach I knew when I was a kid.
Over the years, I’ve been lucky to experience some of the best beaches in the country. But still, when I hear the word beach, I never think of those powdery white sand of the popular ones, all I think about is Onay Beach in my hometown Laoang, Northern Samar.
It’s beautiful and pristine.
Most of all, Onay has some of the vivid memories of my childhood. Until now, I could still feel the mist, the smell of the wind coming from the Pacific Ocean. The laughter…our laughter when we were kids, how could I forget that.
Onay is actually a waray word which means suicide. Stories were told, that long time ago there was a beautiful woman who experienced a devastating heartbreak. It was so painful she decided to take her own life. Her body was found hanging on one of the trees on the beach.
Yes, it has an intriguing legend. So intriguing, it would draw you closer, until you realize its beauty.
It’s okay if you’d accuse me of being subjective when it comes to Onay. Yes, I was born in that town, but I hope you also felt my genuine desire, my call for you to experience its beauty and serenity.
I’ve run out of words, so I’ll just take you to Onay through these photos.
1 | It’s unspoiled. Most of the locals go there during morning and late afternoon. At your perfect time, you can be all alone. The beach is all yours.
2 | If you’re tired of crowds and wants to reflect, this is perfect. You can do whatever you want, you can walk, run and scream your angst, pains to the ocean.
3 | Clean waters especially in the morning
4| The sky is as blue as the ocean…
5 | Don’t you dare miss this rock. The iconic landmark of Onay.
6 | Tired of swimming all day? Take a shot of tuba. Sit back and enjoy the beach. (Tuba is fermented coconut wine)
7 | Onay is perfect for an afternoon walk…
8 |It has the best sunset ever…
When I started this blog, I promised myself to tell the whole world how beautiful Laoang is.
Yes, Onay and my hometown should be your next travel destination.
