As someone who enjoys Thai food and watches food-and-travel videos online, visiting Phed Mark in Bangkok was something I looked forward to during my solo trip to Thailand.
Phed Mark is not just another restaurant serving pad kaprao. It is partly owned by Mark Wiens, one of the world’s most popular food and travel content creators. If you have watched his videos, you probably know how much he loves spicy food, local dishes and, of course, that famous facial expression he makes whenever he tastes something delicious.
So when I found out that his restaurant was conveniently located in Bangkok, I knew I had to include it in my itinerary.
I personally visited Phed Mark during my solo trip in Thailand, and I ordered the pad kaprao with a less-spicy heat level. It was delicious, filling and packed with flavour. More than anything, I was simply happy to finally visit Mark Wiens’ restaurant and experience it for myself.
Was it worth the visit? Let me share my experience, along with everything you need to know before eating at Phed Mark in Bangkok.

What Is Phed Mark?
Phed Mark, written in Thai as เผ็ดมาร์ค, is a casual Bangkok restaurant specialising in one of Thailand’s most popular comfort foods: pad kaprao.
Pad kaprao is a stir-fried dish usually made with meat, garlic, chillies, seasoning and holy basil. It is commonly served over rice and topped with a crispy fried egg.
You will find pad kaprao almost everywhere in Thailand. It is served in street-food stalls, shopping mall food courts, neighbourhood eateries and restaurants. It is quick, affordable and incredibly satisfying.
What makes Phed Mark different is that it focuses almost entirely on this one dish. Instead of offering a long menu filled with dozens of Thai dishes, the restaurant keeps things simple. You choose your protein, select your preferred spice level and enjoy it with rice and a fried duck egg.
The restaurant was founded by Mark Wiens together with several partners, including Thai chef Chef Gigg, food enthusiast Khun Tan and designer and actor Khun Pongthep.
Their goal was to create a bold and flavourful version of pad kaprao using high-quality ingredients and proper Thai holy basil.

What Does “Phed Mark” Mean?
The restaurant’s name is a clever play on words.
The Thai word phed means spicy, while phed mak can be translated as “very spicy.”
The name also includes “Mark,” referring to Mark Wiens himself. So Phed Mark can loosely be understood as both “very spicy” and “Spicy Mark.”
It is a fun and memorable name, especially because Mark Wiens is known for enjoying incredibly spicy food.
And yes, Phed Mark can make your meal seriously spicy. Fortunately, customers can choose their preferred heat level, so you do not have to order the hottest option.
Where Is Phed Mark Located?
Phed Mark is located in the Ekkamai area of Bangkok, close to the Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal.
One of the best things about its location is that it is easy to reach using Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain.
Simply take the BTS Sukhumvit Line and get off at Ekkamai Station. From there, the restaurant is only a short walk away.
The bright red exterior makes it fairly easy to recognise. You may also notice customers, delivery riders and tourists waiting outside, especially during busy hours.
Because Phed Mark is close to the Ekkamai Bus Terminal, it can also be a convenient food stop before travelling to places in eastern Thailand, such as Pattaya, Rayong, Chanthaburi or Trat.
My Solo Trip Visit to Phed Mark
I visited Phed Mark during my solo trip to Thailand.
Travelling alone can sometimes feel intimidating, especially when visiting a popular restaurant for the first time. However, one thing I love about Bangkok is that eating alone feels completely normal.
There are many solo travellers, office workers and local diners eating by themselves. You can simply walk in, order your food and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
When I arrived at Phed Mark, I was excited because I had seen Mark Wiens eat pad kaprao many times in his videos. Being there in person felt like visiting a place that I had already become familiar with online.
The restaurant itself was casual and straightforward. It did not feel like a celebrity-owned establishment. Instead, it had the atmosphere of a modern Thai street-food restaurant.
The space was not very large, so diners should not expect a quiet, spacious or luxurious restaurant. The focus is clearly on serving food quickly and allowing customers to enjoy a satisfying plate of pad kaprao.
What I Ordered at Phed Mark
For my meal, I ordered the pad kaprao and selected the less-spicy option.
I enjoy spicy food, but I also wanted to taste the garlic, basil, chicken and other seasonings without being overwhelmed by the chilli.
This was a good decision.
Even at a lower spice level, the dish still had enough heat to make it exciting. It was spicy, but it was manageable for me. I could enjoy the flavours rather than spending the entire meal trying to recover from every bite.
It was well seasoned. It absorbed the flavours of the garlic, chilli and holy basil beautifully. The rice helped balance the strong seasoning, while the egg added richness to the dish.
Overall, it was delicious.
The meal was simple, but it had everything I expected from a satisfying plate of pad kaprao: saltiness, spice, aroma, richness and a comforting combination of meat and rice.
I genuinely enjoyed the experience.
I was also happy that I finally had the opportunity to visit Mark Wiens’ restaurant. As someone familiar with his food videos, eating at Phed Mark felt like a memorable addition to my solo Thailand adventure.
What Does Phed Mark’s Pad Kaprao Taste Like?
Phed Mark’s pad kaprao is bold and heavily seasoned.
It is not a mild or delicate dish. Expect noticeable flavours of garlic, chilli, black pepper, sauce and holy basil.
The texture is generally dry rather than watery. This is important because some versions of pad kaprao can be overly saucy, with the rice becoming soaked in liquid.
At Phed Mark, the meat is stir-fried intensely so that the seasonings cling to every piece. You may also notice a slightly smoky flavour from the high-heat cooking.
The holy basil gives the dish its signature aroma. It has a peppery, herbal flavour that is different from regular sweet basil.
When combined with steamed rice and a runny egg yolk, the flavours become more balanced and satisfying.

Phed Mark’s Famous Fried Duck Egg
Another feature that makes Phed Mark popular is its fried duck egg.
Many Thai restaurants serve pad kaprao with a fried chicken egg, locally called khai dao. Phed Mark uses a duck egg, which has a richer and creamier yolk.
The egg is usually cooked with crispy edges while keeping the centre soft or runny.
Once you break the yolk and mix it into the rice, it adds a smooth and creamy texture to the meal. It also helps soften the heat of the chillies.
For many visitors, the fried duck egg is one of the highlights of eating at Phed Mark.
Even when your pad kaprao is spicy, mixing it with rice and egg can make each bite more balanced.
Choosing Your Protein
Although Phed Mark is known mainly for one dish, customers can choose from several proteins.
Depending on availability, choices may include:
- Pork
- Chicken
- Beef
- Wagyu beef
- Squid
- Fermented or sour pork
- Tofu or mushroom options
The pork pad kaprao is a great choice for first-time visitors. It is flavourful, familiar and generally more affordable than the premium beef selections.
Chicken is another approachable option, while beef provides a richer taste.
Visitors who want something more indulgent can consider the Wagyu version. However, since pad kaprao contains strong seasoning, garlic and chilli, the natural flavour of premium beef may not be as noticeable as it would be in a simpler dish.
For me, the pork version was already satisfying. I did not feel that I needed to order the most expensive option to enjoy the Phed Mark experience.
Understanding the Spice Levels
Choosing your spice level is one of the most important decisions when ordering at Phed Mark.
The restaurant is famous for spicy food, and its highest heat level is not something to underestimate.
The available spice choices may be presented differently depending on the current menu, but they generally range from:
- Not spicy
- Very mildly spicy
- Less spicy
- Medium spicy
- Very spicy or Phed Mark level
I ordered the less-spicy level, and it worked well for me.
It still had a noticeable kick, but I could enjoy the food comfortably.
Remember that Thai standards of spiciness may be different from what you are used to. A medium spice level in Thailand can already feel extremely hot to some foreign visitors.
Do not feel pressured to order the highest level simply because you are visiting a restaurant known for spicy food.
Your goal should be to enjoy your meal, not to turn it into a chilli challenge.
For most first-time visitors, the mild or less-spicy option is a sensible place to start.
What to Expect at the Restaurant
Phed Mark has a casual, fast-paced dining setup.
Because it is popular among locals, tourists, Mark Wiens fans and food vloggers, the restaurant can become busy.
Here are a few things you may experience:
Limited seating
The restaurant is relatively small, so seating can be limited. During busy periods, you may need to wait for a table or eat quickly to make space for other customers.
Counter-style ordering
Customers generally order at the counter, choose their meal and specify their preferred spice level.
Make sure the staff understand exactly how spicy you want your food.
A possible queue
You may encounter a line during lunch, weekends or peak travel periods.
The wait may be short during quiet hours, but it can take longer when many dine-in customers and delivery riders arrive at the same time.
A lively atmosphere
Phed Mark is not designed for long, relaxed meals. It is more suitable for customers who want to enjoy a plate of pad kaprao and continue exploring Bangkok.
The atmosphere is busy, energetic and casual.
Is Phed Mark Expensive?
Phed Mark is more expensive than the pad kaprao sold at ordinary Bangkok street-food stalls.
In local neighbourhoods, you can find a simple plate of pad kaprao for a much lower price. At Phed Mark, prices are higher because of the restaurant’s branding, location, premium ingredients and popularity.
The final price depends on the protein you choose. Regular pork or chicken dishes are usually more affordable, while Wagyu beef and other premium options cost considerably more.
Although it is not Bangkok’s cheapest pad kaprao, I think it can still be worth visiting for the overall experience.
You are not just paying for rice and stir-fried meat. You are also trying the restaurant’s distinct interpretation of the dish and visiting a place connected to one of the world’s most recognised food creators.
Prices can change, so it is best to check the latest menu before visiting.
Is Phed Mark Halal?
Phed Mark serves pork and prepares different meats in the same restaurant.
I am not aware of it being officially halal-certified. Muslim travellers who follow strict halal requirements should contact the restaurant directly before visiting.
Even when ordering beef, chicken or a vegetarian dish, there may be concerns about shared cooking equipment, utensils and preparation areas.
It is always better to confirm rather than assume.
Does Phed Mark Have Vegetarian Options?
Vegetarian choices may be available, including tofu or mushroom pad kaprao.
However, the restaurant specialises heavily in meat dishes and operates in a compact kitchen.
Strict vegetarians or vegans should ask whether the dish contains fish sauce, oyster sauce or other animal-based seasonings. They should also confirm whether the same cookware is used for meat and vegetarian orders.
Thai stir-fried dishes often include sauces made with seafood ingredients, even when the main protein is tofu or vegetables.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
To avoid the biggest crowds, consider visiting outside the main lunch and dinner periods.
Late morning or mid-afternoon may be quieter than noon.
Visiting on a weekday can also be more comfortable than going during a busy weekend.
However, Bangkok restaurants can change their hours, close temporarily or sell out of certain ingredients. Check Phed Mark’s official social-media pages before making a special trip.
This is particularly important when you are travelling from another part of Bangkok.
Tips for Visiting Phed Mark
Here are a few practical tips based on my experience and what first-time visitors should know.
Start with a lower spice level
You can always appreciate the flavour better when the chilli does not overwhelm your taste buds.
A lower spice level does not mean the food will be bland.
Order the egg
The crispy fried duck egg adds richness and helps balance the chilli.
Mix the yolk into the rice for a creamier bite.
Bring a drink
A cold drink can be helpful, especially if you order medium or high spice.
Water alone may not always reduce the burning sensation, but it can still help you feel refreshed.
Avoid bringing large luggage
The restaurant has limited space. Large backpacks or suitcases may be inconvenient, particularly when it is crowded.
Travellers coming from the nearby Ekkamai Bus Terminal may want to consider this.
Visit outside peak hours
You may have a more comfortable experience and a shorter wait if you avoid the busiest meal times.
Do not order the hottest level just for social media
There is nothing wrong with choosing mild or less spicy.
The dish is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.

Is Phed Mark the Best Pad Kaprao in Bangkok?
This is difficult to answer because Bangkok has thousands of places serving pad kaprao.
Some local street-food stalls prepare incredible versions for a fraction of the price. Others may use family recipes that have been perfected over many years.
Phed Mark offers a specific interpretation: bold, spicy, heavily seasoned and presented with a rich fried duck egg.
Some customers may consider it one of their favourite versions. Others may prefer a cheaper and simpler neighbourhood plate.
Food is personal.
Instead of visiting with the expectation that it must be the absolute best pad kaprao in Bangkok, think of it as an opportunity to try a famous and distinct version of a Thai classic.
You can then compare it with other pad kaprao dishes during your trip.
Was Phed Mark Worth Visiting?
For me, yes.
I enjoyed my pork pad kaprao, and choosing the less-spicy level allowed me to appreciate the flavours without being overwhelmed.
The pork was savoury, the holy basil was aromatic and the entire plate was comforting and satisfying.
But beyond the food, I also enjoyed the experience of visiting the restaurant itself.
I had watched Mark Wiens’ food adventures online, so finally eating at his restaurant during my solo trip felt special. It was one of those simple travel moments that made me happy.
There was no need for an elaborate dining setup. I was simply sitting in Bangkok, enjoying a delicious plate of pad kaprao at Mark Wiens’ restaurant.
That alone made the visit memorable.
Final Thoughts
Phed Mark is a good place to visit if you love Thai food, spicy dishes or Mark Wiens’ travel videos.
Its menu is simple, but that is part of its charm. The restaurant focuses on pad kaprao and gives customers the freedom to choose their protein and spice level.
During my solo trip to Thailand, I ordered the pork pad kaprao with less spice. It was delicious, and I genuinely enjoyed the experience.
I was happy to visit Mark Wiens’ restaurant and finally taste one of the dishes I had often seen featured in Thai food videos.
Is it more expensive than an ordinary Bangkok street-food stall? Yes.
Is it the only place where you should try pad kaprao? Definitely not.
But is it worth adding to your Bangkok itinerary? I believe it is, especially when you are already exploring the Ekkamai area.
Come for the famous name, choose a spice level you can handle and enjoy one of Thailand’s most beloved comfort foods.
For me, Phed Mark was not only a restaurant visit. It became a small but memorable part of my solo Thailand adventure.
