Many people are familiar with classic Chinese noodle dishes and wildly popular Japanese ramen here, but one noodle dish that’s become a surprising favorite here despite its unfamiliarity is the pho of Pho Hoa. First founded by Binh Nguyen in 1983 in California, Mr. Nguyen’s dream was to create a way for Vietnamese refugees to assimilate in the United States, find a taste of home, and pursue their own version of the American Dream.
Starting in a humble space measuring less than 400 square feet, the first Pho Hoa branch in California became so popular that it expanded to San Jose in 1985, where a large Vietnamese immigrant community resides to this day. The brand was a hit with Americans too, and the punchy flavors of Pho Hoa made it expand both across the United States and to other countries!
The first Philippine Pho Hoa branch was opened by the Cua family in Jupiter Street, Makati in 1997 – this branch was later relocated to Greenbelt 1. Entranced by the fresh flavors and umami-packed soups of pho, the Cuas foresaw that it would be a hit with Filipinos. Sure enough, there are over 30 branches of Pho Hoa in the country today, and the brand remained as strong as ever even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
