The first Tokyo Tokyo branch opened in 1985 at Makati’s Quad Car Park, and it immediately stood out in comparison to other Japanese restaurants at the time which were more formal and traditional.
Tokyo Tokyo initially served a menu that featured simple, filling Japanese dishes that were slightly tweaked to the local palate, such as yakisoba, tempura, and tonkatsu. This was a hit with diners looking to try something new. One other ace they had up their sleeves was serving unlimited rice with orders – a concept that appealed to rice-loving Filipinos who wanted full tummies for a reasonable price.
As of 2018, the ubiquitous franchise is now owned by Hansbury Inc. under the One Food Group. This group also owns the local franchises for Mister Donut and KFC – a stellar assembly of fast, casual food chains that Filipinos have loved for years.
