This casual outdoor stall business, however, is a lot older than many people think! Burger Machine was founded in 1981, making it 41 years old this year.
This sub-company of Gilmore Food Corporation was founded by Ms. Fe Esperanza Rodriguez and her sister. Inspired by other American food businesses, the sisters turned two old mini-buses into burger stores operating near two gas stations in Quezon City. The store’s mascot, a charming dwarf, went unnamed for a number of years until it was given the name “Burger Bart” through a naming contest.
Burger Machine is lovingly called “the National Burger Stand of the Philippines”. Though similar competitors have come and gone, Burger Machine was able to weather the Asian Financial Crisis in the ‘90s while rivals failed, thanks to its tasty and simple menu. The business quickly grew from a small employee base of two dozen workers, to over a thousand branches all over the country.
