Dean and DeLuca is a name that’s long been synonymous in New York with luxury baked goods and shelves of fancy deli items. From high-quality olive oil to glistening fruit displays, going through a Dean and DeLuca branch is a foodie’s dream. Now there are several Dean and DeLuca branches on our shores serving delicious pastries and a delectable menu – but few know that the fancy name has gritty roots!
Dean and DeLuca began in September 1977 at 121 Prince Street, located south of Manhattan’s Houston Street. In those days, the area was still mostly associated with warehouses and manufacturing, not classy cafes! However, two men had a vision for creating a space that celebrated all the glorious pleasures of food – schoolteacher turned cheese merchant Georgio DeLuca and Joel Dean, a Simon & Schuster business manager.
The original store was designed to look like an old-fashioned, turn-of-the-century food department with large ceiling fans spinning over vast, impeccably arranged shelves of products. More branches followed, including a new flagship market at the corner of Broadway and Prince Streets in October 1988. Its success quickly allowed the brand to expand overseas, opening branches in Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the Middle East, and Japan.
The first Philippine branches opened in 2015 at Rockwell’s Edades Tower in Makati. A second branch quickly followed, opening in Bonifacio Global City. Today, there are five Dean and Deluca branches in the country catering to health-conscious, discerning Philippine foodies, serving freshly baked pastries, bread, and other incredible main dishes!
