One entirely beloved and familiar franchise to several generations of Filipino foodies is Max’s Restaurant. Famous for serving traditional dishes and tasty, affordable fried chicken, Max’s Restaurant has endured as a favorite amongst families and large groups looking for hearty local fare. Their success dates all the way back to 1945, when Stanford-educated Maximo Gimenez made friends with local American soldiers stationed in Quezon City just after World War II.
When his American friends would visit his home for refreshments, they would always insist on paying for what they drank, and this inspired Maximo to open a café serving food and drinks. This café was the beginning of Max’s, but the ubiquitously juicy, tender fried chicken is credited to his niece Ruby, who made the recipe that diners couldn’t get enough of.
Initially serving “Max’s fried chicken”, steaks, and drinks, Max’s Restaurant started offering more local dishes over the years. It soon became known as “the house that fried chicken built”. From its humble beginnings, it expanded to 170 locations in the Philippines, U.S.A., Canada, and the Middle East. It’s a comforting sight for Filipinos abroad, all looking for that “sarap to the bones” flavor that reminds them of home cooking and familial ties.
Max’s Menu
A must when you’re ordering from Max’s is the crispy, golden Max’s Fried Chicken. Served with a side of sweet potato fries, the lip-smacking goodness of this classic dish is best savored with banana ketchup. Complement this dish with another of their bestsellers: the rich All-Beef Kare-Kare simmered in thick peanut sauce.
The Sizzling Tofu is also a favorite because of its creamy sauce and fiery chilies – utterly delicious with piping-hot cups of rice. If you’re craving something a little more heart and tummy-warming, fans suggest ordering the mouth-puckering Sinigang Na Hipon, with its sour soup’s familiar zest sure to put a smile to any Pinoy’s face.
