In a strategic move to strengthen its fleet and cater to rising passenger demand, Cebu Pacific (CEB) has entered into a damp lease agreement with Bulgaria Air. This decision comes at a critical time as the airline industry begins to bounce back from the pandemic slump, with expectations of a significant increase in air travel in 2024.
The lease arrangement involves two Airbus 320 CEO aircraft, each with a capacity to seat 180 passengers. These planes will be operational on domestic routes, including flights from Manila to Cebu and Davao, from January to May 2024. This move is a part of CEB’s broader strategy to expand its operational capacity and enhance its service offerings on key domestic routes.
Under the terms of the damp lease, also known as an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) agreement, Bulgaria Air will provide not only the aircraft but also the essential crew, maintenance, and insurance services. This arrangement allows CEB to efficiently manage its resources while expanding its fleet.
CEB’s focus on fleet augmentation and operational resilience is evident in its recent financial performance. The airline has made a remarkable recovery, posting a net income of P1.3 billion in the third quarter, a significant turnaround from the previous year’s net loss. This financial upswing is accompanied by a substantial increase in revenues, indicating a robust recovery trajectory.
In anticipation of increased passenger traffic, CEB has been actively working to expand its fleet. The airline has set ambitious targets, aiming to increase its fleet size to 92 by the end of 2024. This expansion plan includes the arrival of 19 new aircraft in 2023 alone, with a projected total of 76 aircraft by the fourth quarter of 2023. The airline expects a 5% to 8% year-on-year growth in seat capacity in 2024.
Part of CEB‘s fleet strategy involves preparing for the grounding of 10 to 20 aircraft starting January 2024. These groundings are necessary for inspections and replacements of the Pratt and Whitney engines that power the A320/321 NEO fleet. The addition of new aircraft is crucial in ensuring uninterrupted service during this period.
