There are many chicken restaurants in the Philippines, but one of them has had enduring popularity for decades: Kenny Rogers Roasters. Its cheery yellow and red lettering is a frequent sight in many malls, and few can resist the aroma of roasting chicken coming from its huge ovens.
The casual dining restaurant Kenny Rogers Roasters was founded by country superstar Kenny Rogers and former Kentucky governor John Y. Brown, Jr. They formed a partnership and opened its first branch in September 1991 shortly after Rogers released a cookbook. The original restaurant sold wood-fired roast chicken, but later expanded its menu to include American favorites such as ribs, turkey, and different sides in 1995.
Eventually, the chain expanded internationally and opened 350 restaurants in Asia, Europe, Canada, and the Middle East. Unfortunately, Kenny Rogers Roasters had to file bankruptcy proceedings in 1998, leading to its acquisition by Nathan’s Famous in 1998.
Shortly afterward, the chain started closing its U.S. locations and restructuring. It was then sold to Roasters Asia Pacific, its Asian Franchisee which is owned by Malaysia’s Berjaya Group. While the chain no longer operates in America, it’s had enduring success in Asia. Today, there are 156 Kenny Rogers Roasters locations worldwide, and it continues to be a popular restaurant in the Philippines. Now Kenny Rogers has 91 branches in the Philippines.
