It’s my third visit to the Suba Sand Dunes in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, yet the thrill and excitement remain unchanged.
My first trip was in 2014. I could still remember the adrenaline-pumping 4×4 ride with its steep inclines, sharp drops, and turns. Then, in 2019, I returned as part of the TPB Philippines and PHILTOA North Luzon Tour.
Five years later, I’m back.
Upon arriving at Laoag Airport for an early morning flight, the DOT Region 1 team warmly welcomed us, and we proceeded to have breakfast.
Next, we embarked on an action-packed 4×4 ride at Suba Paoay Sand Dunes. The landscape felt familiar yet distinctly different. The constantly shifting, undulating sands of the Suba dunes ensure they never appear the same way twice. That’s a deep observation, by the way. Haha
We were divided into groups of five per jeep with my fellow content creators who are also my friends. While some were excited, others expressed hesitation, doubting their ability to withstand the fast and bumpy ride. Having been there thrice, I understand the mix of emotions.
The 4×4 ride through Paoay is an adventure that isn’t always merely fun, it’s sometimes so thrilling that you wonder if you’d dare try it again. Yet, when you’re there, you’re just compelled to embrace the experience.

The 4×4 Ride
As the first group to set off, I felt prepared, knowing the best approach was to relax and flow with the ride. A key piece of advice for newcomers is to avoid resisting the movement. Fighting the jeep’s motion only leads to stress and fatigue.
Instead, allow yourself to move freely with the bounces, sway during sharp turns, and when facing a steep drop, brace yourself slightly and go with the flow. Trust me, surrendering to the experience enhances the enjoyment.
This time, I found myself enjoying the ride, occasionally screaming at the top of my lungs – a natural reaction, I guess. Embrace the adventure despite fear, and all will be well.

Afterwards, we gathered near the beach for photos and drone shots, joining other content creators.
As a travel writer, it’s amazing to watch fellow content creators in action – taking videos, photos, drone shots, and more. As your Tito in travel blogging, I enjoyed both watching and learning from the new generation of travel content creators.
Sandboarding
Sandboarding offers another thrilling activity at Suba Sand Dunes. Whether standing or sitting, sliding down the steep sand dunes promises an adrenaline rush.
Since it was my third time trying it, I chose to let other content creators take the lead this time, acknowledging the challenges posed by age (you know, I’m not getting any younger) and the intense sun too. Instead, I preferred the comfort of shade, reminiscing about my first sandboarding experience years ago.
If you’re interested in what happened during my first time doing sandboarding in 2014, here it is.
Art Installations
The sand dunes also serve as a venue for artistic appreciation, featuring installations inspired by notable films shot here, such as “Himala” by Nora Aunor and “Temptation Island,” alongside an installation commemorating the annual Himala sa Buhangin Music and Arts Festival. We took our time admiring and snapping photos of these art pieces.
The journey back to the starting point, where the tourism office is located, was equally thrilling.
Despite multiple visits, the allure of the Suba Sand Dunes’ 4×4 rides never wanes, mirroring my enduring fascination with Ilocos Norte. It’s a destination that keeps drawing me back.
