This island has a strange shape. We gradually realized it as we approached.
Some said it resembled a whale, while others had different guesses. To me, it looked like a helicopter without a propeller—a notion reinforced by the boatmen who referred to it as Helicopter Island. Haha!
This is officially called Dimalucad Island. Perhaps due to its shape and its popularity among foreign tourists, it’s also nicknamed ‘Helicopter’.
Stepping off the boat and experiencing the island for the first time, I wondered, ‘Are all islands in El Nido like this?’ I could use the cliché ‘fine white sand and beautiful beach’ to describe it, and it would be accurate. Seriously.
The beach’s beauty was further enhanced by towering cliffs and a rainforest in the island’s center. On one side, a massive cliff provides shade for tourists. It was like a perfect background for any photo. The view was just simply dramatic. You have a stunning beach with crystal-clear water, further complemented by the splendor of limestone formations—a perfect combination.
While taking photos in El Nido is a joy, experiencing its cool and calming waters is even more delightful.
As we walked to the other side, we encountered Mike and Sarah, the Swiss couple we had met on our first day. I wasn’t sure why they had been transferred to another boat that day, but it was delightful to see them again. They mentioned a good snorkeling spot on the other side of the island.
Eloi and I were excited at first. But then I realized that snorkeling would require her to change out of the outfit she had carefully prepared in advance. So, we decided to stick with just having a photo session.
Therefore, skipping snorkeling initially and focusing on taking her photos seemed like a good idea. I felt proud of myself for being considerate and sensitive as a boyfriend. Haha!
No regrets, she looked so happy that day. Besides, our next destinations were secret and hidden beaches that required a lot of swimming. Slowing down and relaxing at our first stop turned out to be a wise decision.
Helicopter Island was exactly what we needed—a place to relax, enjoy nature, and forget the city’s stress.
This was just our first stop on El Nido Tour C, and we were already thoroughly satisfied. Imagine a paradise with limestones and forests with clear water. Helicopter Island is a rare beauty, that can only be discovered in El Nido. So, what are you waiting for? A paradise awaits you here in Palawan.
