Apple Pay is now available in the Philippines, but that does not mean every locally issued credit or debit card can be added to Apple Wallet.
Apple officially launched the service in the country on August 4, 2026, with initial support from Chinabank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank, and UnionBank. Eligible customers can use their cards through an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac for purchases in stores, apps, and participating websites.
The important word here is eligible.
Your card needs to meet several requirements. The issuing bank must participate in Apple Pay, the card’s payment network must be supported, and the specific card product must be approved by the bank.
A Visa or Mastercard logo alone does not guarantee that the card will work.
This guide explains which Philippine credit and debit cards currently support Apple Pay, how to identify your card’s network, whether virtual and prepaid cards are eligible, and what to do when a seemingly supported card cannot be added.

Apple Pay-Supported Philippine Cards at a Glance
Based on Apple’s official participating-bank list, these are the card categories supported in the Philippines as of August 6, 2026:
| Philippine bank | Visa credit | Visa debit | Mastercard credit | Mastercard debit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chinabank | Supported | Supported | Supported | Not currently listed |
| GoTyme Bank | Supported | Supported | Not currently listed | Not currently listed |
| Metrobank | Supported | Not currently listed | Supported | Supported |
| UnionBank | Supported | Supported | Supported | Supported |
Apple’s official list identifies the following combinations:
- Chinabank Visa credit and debit cards
- Chinabank Mastercard credit cards
- GoTyme Visa credit and debit cards
- Metrobank Visa credit cards
- Metrobank Mastercard credit and debit cards
- UnionBank Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards
Apple also warns that some cards issued by a participating bank may still be unsupported. Final eligibility is determined by the card issuer.
The Three Things That Determine Card Eligibility
Before looking at individual banks, it helps to understand how Apple Pay eligibility works.
Three things normally need to match.
1. The Bank Must Support Apple Pay
The card must come from a participating issuer.
For example, a BDO Visa card cannot currently be added simply because Visa supports Apple Pay internationally. BDO itself would need to join Apple Pay and enable its eligible cards.
At launch, Apple officially identified Chinabank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank, and UnionBank as its Philippine banking partners.
2. The Card Network Must Be Included
Look at the logo printed on your card.
The initial Philippine rollout covers selected cards using:
- Visa
- Mastercard
However, each bank supports a different combination.
Metrobank currently supports Visa credit cards but does not list Visa debit cards. Chinabank supports Visa credit and debit cards, but Mastercard debit cards are not listed. UnionBank has the broadest published coverage because both Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards are included.
3. The Exact Card Product Must Be Eligible
Even when your bank and network are listed, the specific card may still be excluded.
Possible exclusions could involve:
- Corporate cards
- Government-issued cards
- Payroll cards
- Prepaid cards
- Certain supplementary cards
- Cards connected to restricted accounts
- Discontinued products
- Cards that have not yet been enabled in the bank’s system
Apple advises customers to contact their issuing bank when they are uncertain about a specific card.
Which Chinabank Cards Work with Apple Pay?
Apple officially lists the following Chinabank categories:
- Visa credit cards
- Visa debit cards
- Mastercard credit cards
Chinabank Mastercard debit cards are not currently included in Apple’s published Philippine issuer list.
Chinabank Visa Credit Cards
A Chinabank Visa credit card belongs to a supported card category.
This may cover eligible Visa-branded products issued by Chinabank, but enrollment is still subject to the bank’s verification and approval.
The card should generally be:
- Active
- Unexpired
- In good standing
- Not reported lost or stolen
- Not temporarily locked
- Eligible for digital-wallet enrollment
Chinabank Mastercard Credit Cards
Chinabank Mastercard credit cards are also included in Apple’s official list.
Having a Mastercard credit card from Chinabank means you may attempt to add it to Apple Wallet. It does not necessarily guarantee that every principal, supplementary, corporate, or specialized Mastercard product will be approved.
Chinabank Visa Debit Cards
Eligible Chinabank Visa debit cards can also work with Apple Pay.
When used through Apple Pay, purchases are charged to the deposit account linked to the debit card. Your available account balance and the bank’s transaction controls still apply.
Chinabank Mastercard Debit Cards
Chinabank Mastercard debit cards are not currently listed by Apple as a supported Philippine category.
Do not assume that one will work simply because Chinabank participates in Apple Pay. The card’s payment network and type must also match Apple’s published list.
How to Check a Chinabank Card
You can try adding the card directly through Apple Wallet:
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap the plus sign.
- Select Debit or Credit Card.
- Scan or manually enter the card.
- Complete Chinabank’s verification process.
If enrollment fails, contact Chinabank through its official customer-service channel. Chinabank’s Apple Pay page lists its customer-service hotline as +632 888-55-888.
Which GoTyme Cards Work with Apple Pay?
Apple’s issuer list broadly identifies GoTyme Visa debit and credit cards as supported. GoTyme provides a more detailed product-level list on its own Apple Pay page.
GoTyme currently identifies the following eligible cards:
- GoTyme Bank Physical Debit Card
- GoTyme Bank Virtual Debit Card
- MoreTyme Virtual Card
The card must be active and must not be locked or expired. The customer must also be able to complete any required verification, such as receiving a one-time PIN.
GoTyme Physical Debit Card
The standard physical GoTyme Visa debit card can be added to Apple Wallet.
Once activated, it can be used through Apple Pay at compatible contactless terminals, apps, and websites.
The payment is still deducted from the available balance in your GoTyme account. Apple Pay does not create a separate balance or change the card into a credit product.
GoTyme Virtual Debit Card
GoTyme also confirms that its virtual debit card can be added.
This is useful when you prefer not to use your physical card details during online purchases or when you want to begin using Apple Pay without taking the physical card out of your wallet.
You can add an eligible card through the GoTyme Bank app by opening the Cards page, selecting the card, and tapping Add to Apple Wallet. You may also add it directly through the Wallet app.
MoreTyme Virtual Card
The MoreTyme virtual card is also included in GoTyme’s list of cards that can be added to Apple Wallet.
MoreTyme is a separate GoTyme payment product with installment features for eligible users. GoTyme states that MoreTyme Pay-in-4 can work with Apple Pay after the virtual card is linked. Availability and installment terms depend on the individual customer’s eligibility.
Do You Still Earn Go Rewards Points?
GoTyme says customers continue receiving the normal benefits and rewards associated with their card when paying through Apple Pay, including eligible Go Rewards points.
Normal rewards rules still apply. Some transactions, reversals, refunds, cash-like purchases, and excluded merchant categories may not earn points.
Which Metrobank Cards Work with Apple Pay?
Apple officially lists these Metrobank card categories:
- Visa credit cards
- Mastercard credit cards
- Mastercard debit cards
Metrobank Visa debit cards are not currently included in Apple’s public Philippine issuer list.
Metrobank Visa Credit Cards
Eligible Metrobank Visa credit cards can be added to Apple Wallet.
These could include various Visa-branded Metrobank products, but customers should confirm the exact card through the Metrobank app or Apple Wallet.
A supported Visa credit card remains governed by its normal:
- Credit limit
- Billing cycle
- Interest rate
- Annual fee
- Payment due date
- Rewards program
- Foreign transaction fee
- Security controls
Apple Pay only provides a tokenized way to present the card. It does not create a different account or change the card’s original terms.
Metrobank Mastercard Credit Cards
Eligible Metrobank Mastercard credit cards are also supported.
Metrobank allows customers to add a card using either the Metrobank app or Apple Wallet. In the Metrobank app, select the card, tap Add to Apple Wallet, and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Metrobank Mastercard Debit Cards
Eligible Metrobank Mastercard debit cards belong to a supported category.
When you use one through Apple Pay, the purchase is charged to the linked deposit account. The payment can still be declined when the account has an insufficient available balance or when the bank has restricted the card.
Metrobank Visa Debit Cards
Metrobank Visa debit cards are not currently listed by Apple.
This distinction matters because seeing “Metrobank” on Apple’s list does not mean all Metrobank cards are automatically supported.
Always check the network printed on the card itself.
Metrobank Prepaid Cards
Apple’s Philippine launch announcement says eligible debit, credit, or prepaid Visa and Mastercard cards may be supported by participating banks. Metrobank’s help information also refers to eligible credit, debit, and prepaid cards, including qualifying physical, primary, and supplementary cards. However, the exact prepaid product must still be confirmed with Metrobank before you rely on it.
A Metrobank prepaid card should not be considered eligible based only on the word “prepaid.” The specific product must be enabled for Apple Wallet.
Primary and Supplementary Metrobank Cards
Metrobank states that eligible primary and supplementary cards may be added.
A supplementary cardholder should add the card issued in their own name and complete any verification required by Metrobank. The principal cardholder’s Apple Account or device should not be used unless the bank’s terms specifically permit that arrangement.
What If a Metrobank Card Cannot Be Added?
Metrobank lists common reasons such as:
- Incorrect card information
- An inactive card
- A locked card
- An expired card
- An ineligible product
- An incompatible Apple device
- Unsupported operating-system software
Metrobank also notes that the bank or merchant may apply transaction limits even though Apple Pay itself does not impose one universal purchase limit.
Which UnionBank Cards Work with Apple Pay?
Apple officially lists the broadest range of card categories for UnionBank:
- Visa credit cards
- Visa debit cards
- Mastercard credit cards
- Mastercard debit cards
This means all four major combinations are included in Apple’s published list. Individual card eligibility still depends on UnionBank’s approval.
UnionBank Visa Credit Cards
Eligible UnionBank Visa credit cards can be added to Apple Wallet.
This may include cards originally issued by UnionBank and selected card products transferred to UnionBank from another institution. However, customers with former Citi-branded or migrated accounts should confirm eligibility rather than assuming every transferred product works automatically.
UnionBank Mastercard Credit Cards
Eligible UnionBank Mastercard credit cards also belong to a supported category.
The card must generally be active, unexpired, and in good standing. UnionBank may require account verification before allowing the digital version of the card to be created.
UnionBank Visa Debit Cards
Eligible UnionBank Visa debit cards can be used with Apple Pay.
Purchases are charged against the linked account balance, just as they would be when using the physical debit card.
UnionBank Mastercard Debit Cards
Apple also lists UnionBank Mastercard debit cards as supported.
This gives UnionBank the widest published debit-card network coverage among the four launch banks because both its Visa and Mastercard debit categories are included.
UnionBank Virtual Cards
Apple announced that customers of selected banks would be able to apply for a virtual card through a banking app or website, receive it instantly, and add it to Apple Pay. UnionBank was among the participating institutions associated with virtual-card availability at launch.
Not every virtual card is automatically eligible. The product must appear as supported in UnionBank’s system and successfully complete Wallet verification.
Former Citi Cards Now Under UnionBank
Some Philippine credit-card accounts previously issued by Citi have been transferred to UnionBank.
Because individual product eligibility can vary, cardholders should try adding the current UnionBank-issued or migrated card through Wallet. When the card is rejected, UnionBank must confirm whether the particular migrated product is supported.
Apple’s general listing of UnionBank Visa and Mastercard credit cards is encouraging, but it should not be treated as a guarantee for every legacy product.
Which Philippine Cards Do Not Currently Work?
Cards from banks or issuers not included in Apple’s current Philippine list should be treated as unsupported.
As of August 6, 2026, Apple’s official list does not include:
- BDO
- BPI
- RCBC
- Security Bank
- EastWest
- Philippine National Bank
- LandBank
- HSBC Philippines
- Maybank Philippines
- Bank of Commerce
- AUB
- PSBank as a separate issuer
- GCash
- Maya as a consumer-card issuer
Apple says it continues working with more banks to support Apple Pay, but a new bank should only be considered supported after it appears on Apple’s list or publishes an official announcement.
Does a BDO Card Work with Apple Pay?
BDO is not one of Apple Pay’s initial Philippine issuers.
This means locally issued BDO Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, credit, debit, and prepaid cards should not currently be assumed eligible.
Even a contactless BDO card cannot be added unless BDO officially enables that particular product.
Does a BPI Card Work?
BPI is also absent from Apple’s official Philippine issuer list as of August 6, 2026.
BPI Visa and Mastercard products may work as physical contactless cards, but this is different from being eligible for Apple Wallet.
Does an RCBC Card Work?
RCBC cards are not currently listed.
The same rule applies: the network logo is not enough. RCBC must first become a participating issuer and enable its cards.
Does a GCash Card Work with Apple Pay?
GCash is not listed as a participating Philippine issuer.
Therefore, a GCash Visa card cannot currently be assumed eligible for Apple Pay merely because it uses the Visa network.
Visa provides the payment infrastructure, but GCash or its card-issuing partner must separately enable the product for Apple Wallet.
Does a Maya Card Work with Apple Pay?
Maya’s consumer cards are not included in Apple’s initial issuer list.
Maya is involved in the Philippine launch through Maya Business, which Apple says will begin enabling Apple Pay acceptance for more than 5,000 online merchants. That is a merchant-processing arrangement, not confirmation that Maya consumer cards can be added to Wallet.
There are two separate roles:
- A card issuer enables its customers to add cards.
- A merchant processor helps businesses accept Apple Pay.
Maya is currently confirmed on the merchant-acceptance side.
Do Philippine American Express Cards Work?
American Express is not listed among the supported networks for locally issued cards at the Philippine launch.
Apple’s public Philippine issuer list currently identifies selected Visa and Mastercard products. A BDO-issued American Express card, for example, should not be assumed eligible.
A foreign-issued American Express card may still work when it comes from a participating Apple Pay issuer in another country.
Do JCB Cards Work?
No Philippine-issued JCB cards are currently included in Apple’s local issuer list.
Apple Pay support for JCB exists in selected overseas markets, but eligibility depends on the issuing bank and country. A Philippine JCB card cannot be added merely because Apple supports JCB elsewhere.
Do Prepaid Cards Work with Apple Pay?
Some eligible prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards may work.
Apple’s Philippine launch footnote includes eligible debit, credit, or prepaid Mastercard and Visa cards from the participating banks. However, Apple’s separate issuer list provides more specific card-network categories for each institution.
For this reason, do not assume that every:
- Payroll card
- Gift card
- Travel card
- Reloadable card
- Government payment card
- Student card
- Prepaid virtual card
is eligible.
The specific issuing bank must confirm the product.
Do Virtual Credit and Debit Cards Work?
Yes, when the virtual card is supported by its issuer.
Confirmed examples include:
- GoTyme Virtual Debit Card
- MoreTyme Virtual Card
- Eligible virtual cards issued by participating banks
Virtual cards can be useful because you may not need to wait for a physical card before adding the account to Apple Wallet. Apple said selected bank customers could receive a virtual card instantly and begin paying through their Apple devices.
A virtual card is not automatically eligible just because it has a card number, expiration date, and security code.
Do Supplementary Credit Cards Work?
Some supplementary cards may work.
Eligibility depends on the issuing bank and card product. The supplementary card should generally have:
- Its own card number
- The supplementary cardholder’s name
- Active status
- Sufficient verification information
- Permission from the issuer to be added to a digital wallet
Metrobank specifically says eligible supplementary cards may be added. Other cardholders should confirm their bank’s rules before enrollment.
A supplementary cardholder should normally add the card to their own Apple Wallet rather than use the principal cardholder’s credentials.
Do Corporate and Business Cards Work?
Corporate-card eligibility is less predictable.
A bank may support personal Visa and Mastercard cards while excluding:
- Corporate cards
- Purchasing cards
- Fleet cards
- Company-issued cards
- Commercial payment products
The company may also disable digital-wallet enrollment through its account controls.
Contact the card administrator or issuing bank before attempting to use a company card with Apple Pay.
Do Payroll and Government Cards Work?
Do not assume that a payroll, pension, benefits, or government-linked debit card is eligible.
Even when the card is issued by a participating bank, special-purpose products may be governed by different rules.
This may affect cards connected to:
- Payroll accounts
- Government benefits
- Pension payments
- Social-security programs
- Employee expense programs
- Restricted deposit accounts
The issuer must confirm that the particular card can be tokenized for Apple Pay.
Can a Foreign-Issued Card Be Used in the Philippines?
Yes, a foreign-issued card can generally be used through Apple Pay in the Philippines when:
- The card’s issuing bank supports Apple Pay
- The exact card product is eligible
- The card has been successfully added to Wallet
- The Philippine merchant accepts the card’s network
- The terminal supports contactless payments
- The bank allows international transactions
Card eligibility follows the issuing bank and country—not simply the user’s present location.
A tourist with a supported American, Singaporean, Australian, British, Japanese, or other foreign-issued card may therefore use Apple Pay at compatible Philippine merchants.
Foreign transaction and currency-conversion fees may apply.
How to Identify Your Card’s Network and Type
Before trying to add the card, inspect the front and back.
Check the Network Logo
Look for:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- JCB
- UnionPay
For locally issued cards, the current Philippine rollout focuses on eligible Visa and Mastercard products.
Check Whether It Is Credit, Debit, or Prepaid
The word may be printed on the card.
When it is not obvious, check your banking app or account documents.
A credit card uses a credit line. A debit card draws money from a linked deposit account. A prepaid card normally spends funds loaded onto the card.
Check the Issuing Institution
The card must be issued by one of the participating banks.
A Visa card issued by an unsupported bank remains unsupported.
How to Confirm Whether Your Exact Card Works
The safest method is to use several checks.
Check Apple’s Official List
Look for the exact combination of:
- Bank
- Network
- Credit or debit status
For example, “Metrobank” alone is not enough. You need to know whether your Metrobank card is Visa or Mastercard and whether it is credit or debit.
Check the Bank’s Official App
Look for a button such as:
- Add to Apple Wallet
- Add to Apple Pay
- Digital Wallet
- Manage Wallets
GoTyme and Metrobank both provide ways to add eligible cards through their banking apps.
Try Adding It Through Wallet
Open Apple Wallet and:
- Tap the plus sign.
- Select Debit or Credit Card.
- Scan or manually enter the card.
- Follow the bank’s verification instructions.
A successful enrollment is the clearest confirmation that the particular card is supported.
Contact the Issuing Bank
When Wallet displays an error, the bank—not Apple—usually needs to resolve the issue.
The issuer controls:
- Product eligibility
- Identity verification
- Account restrictions
- Device limits
- Fraud screening
- Card activation
- Transaction approval
Why Can’t I Add a Supported Card?
A card may belong to a supported category and still fail during enrollment.
Common reasons include:
The Card Is Locked
Unlock it through the banking app before trying again.
The Card Has Not Been Activated
New physical cards may need to be activated first.
The Card Is Expired
An expired card cannot normally be added.
The Account Is Restricted
Past-due, suspended, closed, or under-review accounts may be ineligible.
The Card Details Are Incorrect
Review the card number, expiration date, security code, and name.
Your Bank Has an Old Mobile Number
You may be unable to receive the one-time password required for verification.
The Product Has Not Been Enabled
The card may belong to a supported network but still be excluded by the bank.
You Reached the Device Limit
Some issuers restrict the number of Apple devices that can hold the same card.
Your Apple Device Is Not Compatible
Apple Pay requires a compatible device, supported software, an Apple Account, and Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
There Is a Temporary System Issue
The bank, card network, internet connection, or Apple service may be temporarily unavailable.
Can You Add the Same Card to Several Apple Devices?
Generally, yes.
An eligible card may be added separately to an:
- iPhone
- Apple Watch
- iPad
- Mac
The bank may require verification for each device.
Each device receives its own secure digital payment credential, so adding the card to an iPhone does not always mean it is automatically active on the Apple Watch.
GoTyme says that after adding a card on an iPhone, users may be offered an option to add it to their other Apple devices.
Can You Add Several Philippine Cards?
Yes.
You could potentially keep eligible cards from different banks in the same Apple Wallet, such as:
- A GoTyme debit card
- A Metrobank credit card
- A Chinabank credit card
- A UnionBank debit card
Each card must be verified separately.
You can choose a default card and switch to another one before authorizing a purchase.
Will Card Rewards Still Apply?
Apple says users continue receiving the same eligible rewards and benefits offered by their linked debit and credit cards.
Depending on the card, this may include:
- Reward points
- Cashback
- Airline miles
- Go Rewards points
- Purchase protection
- Dining benefits
- Travel privileges
- Merchant discounts
However, individual promotions may have separate conditions. Check whether a bank promotion excludes mobile-wallet, tokenized, online, or contactless transactions.
Does Apple Pay Change the Card’s Limit or Fees?
No.
Apple Pay does not normally change your:
- Credit limit
- Debit-account balance
- Billing cycle
- Statement date
- Payment deadline
- Interest rate
- Annual fee
- Foreign transaction fee
- Cash-advance limit
It is another way to present the same underlying card.
Metrobank explains that a digital wallet creates a secure token that replaces the physical card number during payment, while tokenized transactions remain governed by the existing card terms.
Are Apple Pay Card Transactions Secure?
Apple says the actual credit or debit card number is not stored on the device or on Apple’s servers.
Instead, a unique Device Account Number is created, encrypted, and stored in the device’s Secure Element. Apple also says it does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to an individual user.
Payments generally require:
- Face ID
- Touch ID
- Apple Watch authentication
- A device passcode
GoTyme and Metrobank similarly state that the actual debit or credit card number is not shared with merchants during Apple Pay transactions.

Tips Before Trying to Add Your Card
Check the following first:
- Identify the issuing bank.
- Look for the Visa or Mastercard logo.
- Determine whether the card is credit, debit, or prepaid.
- Make sure the card is active.
- Unlock it if it is temporarily frozen.
- Confirm that it has not expired.
- Update your banking app.
- Update your Apple device.
- Enable Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
- Confirm that the bank has your current mobile number.
- Use only official bank and Apple applications.
- Never share your one-time PIN with another person.
- Contact the issuer when verification fails.

Final Thoughts
The initial Apple Pay rollout in the Philippines gives eligible customers of Chinabank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank, and UnionBank a new way to use their cards.
However, support is not as simple as checking whether your bank appears on the list.
You also need to consider the payment network and card type:
- Chinabank: Visa credit and debit; Mastercard credit
- GoTyme Bank: Visa credit and debit, with confirmed physical and virtual card options
- Metrobank: Visa credit; Mastercard credit and debit
- UnionBank: Visa and Mastercard credit and debit
Some prepaid, virtual, supplementary, or specialized products may also work, but only when the issuing bank has enabled them.
The easiest way to check is to open Apple Wallet and try adding the card. When it is accepted and verified, you can begin using it through your iPhone or Apple Watch at compatible contactless terminals and through participating apps and websites.
When the card is rejected, contact the issuing bank. Apple provides the Wallet technology, but your bank decides whether the exact card is eligible and whether each transaction is approved.
