After having our breakfast at Cafe Luca in Laoag, we took a short trip to our next stop – the Malacañang of the North. This mansion served as the official residence for the family of former President Marcos Sr. in Ilocos Norte during his tenure and the era of martial law.
Located along the serene shores of Paoay Lake, the two-story mansion is a testament to the opulent lifestyle of the Marcos family. Originally gifted by Imelda Marcos to her husband on his 60th birthday, it exudes grandeur from every angle. After the regime, it was later transformed into a museum and opened to the public in 2011 managed by the LGU and the DOT.

Malacañang of the North Experience
Upon passing through the gates, we found ourselves on a road surrounded by lush greenery, leading us to the structure. Our guide, Ms. Arlene, provided insightful details about the Malacañang of the North by the time we entered the mansion.
Spanning approximately 1900 square meters, the property once housed seven rooms, some of which have since been repurposed into comfort facilities and souvenir shops as part of its transformation into a museum.

On the ground floor, immediately upon entering, lies the former room of President Bongbong Marcos, still adorned with his portrait. Adjacent to it stands the remaining guest room, while further along is the spacious office where the former President conducted affairs of state when he was in Ilocos Norte. It now hosts a museum showcasing Marcos Sr.’s projects and accomplishments.

Ascending to the second floor, we encountered a large room dedicated to a museum honoring Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), alongside another exhibition highlighting Imelda Marcos’ contributions to arts and culture.
Venturing deeper into the second floor, we discovered a room adjacent to the dining area, once shared by the former president’s daughters, Sen. Imee Marcos and Irene Marcos.

Throughout both floors, two grand dining areas are adorned with numerous photographs and memorabilia, offering glimpses into the lives of Marcos Sr. and his family.
However, perhaps the most captivating aspect of the mansion is its breathtaking views of Paoay Lake. With this kind of view, you’d realize why the family favored this place as their home in the north.

Our guide, Arlene, shared some fascinating insights about the mansion, including the family’s superstitions. She mentioned their belief in the lucky number 7, illustrated by the seven steps leading to the entrance. Also, she explained the Oro Plata Mata superstition, where the staircase’s 25 steps end in Oro (gold) which is good luck. Ending the staircase in Mata is considered bad luck and thus avoided. Please also note that the sum of the staircase’s 25 steps, 2 and 5, equals 7.
My visit to the Malacañang of the North was not only informative but also a journey through history. Thanks to our knowledgeable guide, every corner of the mansion revealed stories of the former first family’s extravagant lifestyle, shedding light on their time in office and the period of martial law.

Malacañang of the North is located along the shores of Paoay Lake, approximately 9 kilometers away from Laoag City. You can easily reach it by hiring a tricycle, renting a car, or joining a guided tour.

3. Garden: Take a stroll through the well-manicured gardens surrounding the mansion. Admire the lush greenery, colorful blooms, and serene atmosphere.
