The tourism staff informed us that we would be exploring waterfalls that day, named A’pfaw Mahencha Waterfalls.
After traveling approximately 5 kilometers from Mayoyao Plaza, we arrived at Khohang Garden and Viewpoint, situated atop a hill offering breathtaking views of the rice terraces and the town proper. This garden served as the gateway to the waterfalls. Before embarking on the long trek, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast.
Breakfast at Khohang Garden consisted of rice, eggplant, tomatoes, and dried fish neatly packed in banana leaves. Also, there were packs of longganisa available instead of dried fish. Of course, I tried both options. The garden provided ample tables and chairs, allowing us to savor our breakfast while admiring the lush greenery of Mayoyao.
Our breakfast and stunning view provided ample fuel for the upcoming trek to the waterfalls.
A’pfaw Mahencha Falls Experience
The trek commenced with a descent of approximately 536 steps along a paved path with railings. As I descended, I couldn’t help but anticipate and think about the challenge of climbing back up. Haha!
However, as the saying goes, “Don’t be anxious about what’s going to happen but enjoy the present moment,” which was precisely what we did. The trail boasted abundant fauna, including various bird species.
The sound of rushing water signaled our imminent arrival at the waterfalls. The A’pfaw Mahencha Waterfalls proved to be a mesmerizing sight, featuring a three-tiered cascade of crystal-clear waters. Unlike the Tenogtog Falls we explored the previous day, A’pfaw Mahencha Waterfalls offered a distinct experience, with its three tiers visible until the water passes through the viewpoint area, adorned with cottages and a pavilion.
Without delay, we proceeded to explore the second tier of the waterfalls. After a brief hike, we were greeted by another natural marvel. I took the opportunity to capture some photos, while our photographer friends kindly snapped shots of us.
The highlight of experiencing the waterfalls was taking a refreshing dip in its cool waters. Some members of our group even dared to leap from the second tier into the water basin, reminiscent of Lady Mahencha’s legendary jump in Mayoyao folklore to retrieve her amber necklace, which inspired the falls’ name.
We lingered at the falls for about an hour, capturing photos and engaging in pleasant conversations with our group from TPB, tour guides, and fellow bloggers. When it was time to return, I mentally and emotionally prepared myself for the hike back. While it was indeed tiring, we took our time and avoided rushing.

Drawing from my past hiking experiences, I remembered that much of the stress stemmed from attempting to keep pace with stronger hikers. Fortunately, in our case, we all proceeded at our own pace, allowing for relaxation as needed.
Upon our return to Khohang Garden, some of us took the opportunity to rest while awaiting the rest of the group.
If you find yourself in Mayoyao, I highly recommend visiting A’pfaw Mahencha Falls, especially if you share my love for nature. Simply coordinate with the Mayoyao Tourism Office, as they are more than willing to assist.
