MAURA’S CAFE in Mayoyao, Ifugao (Review & Story)

During our second day in Mayoyao, we returned to the plaza near the municipal hall for dinner. To our surprise, a well-lit and decorated section of the plaza in front of Maura’s Cafe, our dining destination, caught our attention.

A bonfire had been set up, a thoughtful addition considering the chilly mountain evenings.

Maura’s Cafe, the venue for our dinner, clearly made a lasting impression on us. While the food was being prepared, we had the chance to chat with Harris, the cafe’s owner. He explained that it was named after his grandmother, whose house once occupied the cafe. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, they launched the cafe in February 2022.

Maura’s Cafe Experience

For dinner, a delightful array of pork, vegetables, and the famous Pikaw – a Japanese fish cultivated in Mayoyao – awaited us. In my previous blog posts, I shared that there is a Pikaw Hatchery near the plaza in an attempt to propagate the fish. This is a popular source of protein in Mayoyao and Ifugao that guests should also try.

It was my first time trying Pikaw. After a long afternoon trekking the Mayoyao Rice Terraces, a satisfying dinner seemed like the perfect way to end the day.

As I eagerly awaited my turn at the buffet, I couldn’t help but appreciate the creative presentation with lights adorning the tables and crisp vegetables serving as decorations. By the time I got to taste the food, well, Maura’s Cafe exceeded my expectations.

The food was flavorful from the savory meat, fresh vegetables, and the tasty Pikaw. Maura’s Cafe is elevating local cuisine to new heights, infusing it with rich flavors.

What also stood out was the rice, which had a distinct and delicious taste. We learned it was heirloom rice, a special variety passed down through generations of Ifugao ancestors. To truly savor the essence of Ifugao’s culinary heritage, one must experience Maura’s Cafe and indulge in its rice meals.

After dinner, we had the chance to take a look at the cafe’s menu and discovered that while they honor traditional Mayoyao dishes, they also incorporate modern influences to cater to a broader customer base.

Overall, our dining experience at Maura’s Cafe was exceptional. Finally tasting Pikaw was a highlight, and I eagerly anticipate returning for another culinary adventure.
